Ive read up on a few drills to try out for staying connected in the golf swing. Towel / glove under the arm pit. I think my arms are out racing my body on the downswing. Has anyone tried any drills like this and do you know is the drill just for a half backswing to get the right feel (I cant complete backswing with a towel under both arms) Is the towel or glove supposed to be under both arms? Or is it better to do this drill with the glove under the left arm only? The drills ive read up on seem to contradict one another. thanks John |

The way I imagine the arms in the golf swing is that your upper arms are superglued to your chest. Then when you swing they stay there. Put the towel across your chest and under both arms, then do a full swing and see if you can keep the towel there. Russ |

Thanks Russell
Ive been to the driving range tonight and started off with the towel under left arm hitting my PW . Was hitting the ball really well even though it felt awkward. Then bought a 'power band' in the shop (only £8) and that felt really weird (as if the club was getting nowwhere near high enough on backswing, but i was really hiiting my rescue club well - even with a bit of a draw which i never do. Tried a few balls at the end with driver but they were bad. Only hit approx. 35 / 40 balls so i'll persevere over the next few days and see how it goes.
thanks again John

Hitting behind the ball can be caused by a few things. ARe you dipping on the downswing, are you shifting your weight properly. I read an article aout ten years ago about keeping your left arm straight (for right handers). Get a 2 litre bottle and cut the ends off so its straight. Slide it over you left elbow so you can't bend it. Every time I went outside for a fag i'd do this and swing the club half way up and through. Doing this will not only keep you in the mood for a game of golf, it will help you, over time, to naturally keep your left arm straight which will help you hit the ball further and help you hit the ball cleanly off the turf. If you can then learn to shift your weight properly and stay the same height, tops and taking a 2 foot divot should be a thing of the past. |

John, I used to be a very 'arms and hands' swinger. I am much more compact and connected now though. This was due to a chest operation which meant I couldn't lift my right arm away from my body too much. Now I'm not suggesting you have your chest cut open, but if you imagine swinging with a big plaster on your chest pulling your chest hairs out if you lift your arms too far away from your body you will find that you swing much more with your shoulders, keeping your upper arms in contact with your body which will promote a in-2-out swing giving a nice draw shot shape (assuming the clubhead is square at impact!). |
