Yesterday at various venues around the UK, The 2009 Open Championship started (and finished) for many of our Home Players.

The Regional Qualifying took place, if anyone wants to see how your Pro or Amateurs from your Club did, the full results are available on "Opengolf" Web Site.

Yeah had a look at this yesterday, our Pro didn't do very well - didn't qualify.

How do you get into these regional qualifiers?  Just out of interest.

No Darren he isn't (not close anyway) thou if he wins I may adopt him.

He may be related to the Lythgoe who used to play football for Norwich City.

Chris,

The exact criteria may have changed but it used to be that you had to be 2Hcp or below to enter as an Amateur or a PGA Pro. You then picked which Course you wanted to play and the R&A tried to put you at that venue.

Scratch or lower Amateurs were exempt from the Regional Qualifying and went straight into Final Qualifying along with the higher ranked Tour Pro's.

The Official entry form was found in the "Golf Illustrated" around March time, something to do with the 'deal' they had with the R&A. It used to be The Golf Illustrated Exhibition Tent where you found all the Manufacturers Stands.

Thanks Lyth, interesting reading and reassuring that the great and the good (tho' not on that day) are capable of shooting 80+...hey we're just as good as them!

I see our young 16 year old amateur didn't make the cut at Lindrick shooting 77. Good experience for him I should imagine and no doubt next year he'll get through to the actual Open event itself.

To a lot of people there are a number of Free Events that are good viewing. The Regional and Final Qualifying for The Open are two of them. Specially if a Play-Off is needed, which it usually is.

Pro Golf has changed a lot over the last thirty years. As a youngster you learned the Trade in the Monday Qualifiers, today you learn it on the Amateur Circuit. The problem is that for every Rory McIlroy that makes it, there are several Seve,s that don't.
