It was a bit disappointing the way a certain player behaved in the competition today (my first. Yeah!). This was the other team captain and the comp organiser. He also has the lowest handicap (14 for today). Others who who have played with him before had commented that he always wins these comps (one way or another!)

Not only did he decide to cut my handicap before even seeing me play, but as he was marking my card, he kept mixing my score up, forgetting to put my score on until 2 holes later then guessing what I had scored. Just as well I was keeping tabs on my score myself as well. He also did his best to put me off at every tee shot (I'll put you down for a 3 off the tee) as I was addressing the ball. Now dont get me wrong, I'm all for a bit of banter  and can give as good as I get, but theres a time and a place. After the first 3 holes I was on 8 pts. His mood turned quite bad then and I was then know as the F*****g Bandit. He smashed the ball along way BUT rarely straight and never played a provisional when he went deep into the woods and ALWAYS found his ball which had cleverly weaved its way through the trees to just short of the green. And to cap it all, when we had all finished, went to the local pub and handed the cards to him, he declared himself (and his team) the winners even though the combined score of the team put them in second behind the team I was in. I then double checked the card he had scored for me and found several 'errors'which when rectified put me on level points with him. He accepted me as the joint lead scorer begrudgingly, then downed his drink muttered something under his breath and left.

Cant wait till the next game to p*ss him off again! Lol.

If we were playing for money I would have! I did let him get to me during a few holes, but once I sorted out my concentration and started scoring again, if affected him more than words could have.

First time I have socialised or played with the bloke and so was a bit unsure of him. Have got his card well and truely marked now. It just amazed me that some people cannot accept coming second and would try and ensure they didn't by any means possible, even in a meaningless comp like this. i normally play with like minded friends who rib each other, but take the game for what it is ... a game, win or loose.

John, all the other players were great, just this one pillock. But you are right, now I have this first one under my belt I feel more confident about entering comps and so will definitely enter at least one if not more Golfshake events this year.

You did well to restrain yourself.  I have experienced similar things, including the 'miracle find' ball, which never gets lost and does a Kennedy-esque 'magic bullet' through rough and trees.

I think you'll find such a person also has a liberal interpretation of the rules for himself, particularly when it comes to penalty drops, but will call the club pro for a ruling if he thinks he can impose a harsh ruling on you.

Pathetic.

As the old saying goes your only cheating your self. I don't like losing, but you take it on the chin like a man and it only makes you better IMO as you want to get back out to play and win the next time.

Sadly guys like this are everywhere, maybes needs to be kept a very close eye on next time his ball heads for the trees, make him play his penalties.

"I think you'll find such a person also has a liberal interpretation of the rules for himself"

You are right Martin. There was a dubious call over an OoB drive. The fairway cut was quite clear going around the corner, but he insited that the 'line' was a straight line between the posts each side, making his ball a few inches in play! And another time his ball landed up against a small sapling in the rough. He moved his ball to one side without penalty as he didn't want to damage the tree. Really couldn't be bothered to argue by that point. I took the same veiw as Mark, he was after all only cheating himself.

One thing for sure is that I will have to learn the rules abit better just in case the situation rises again, as it was hard to dispute anything when I wasn't 100% sure myself.

As regards the OOB, I think he's actually right as outside the line of the posts is the rule.  However, if the tree was not staked or a local rule stating 'young trees' was in place he should have taken a penalty.

Next time out, take a book of the rules with you and check every ruling, even the obvious ones.  And if his ball goes into the trees, walk in there with him to 'give him a hand to find it' and ask what he is playing as you go in there.

Some people obviously forget that this is just a game.  Shaming the idiot by proving what everyone knows that he is a cheat will be much more satisfying.

The shame of it is that he is actually a good golfer when he is not putting his energy into putting others down or trying to out-drive everyone. Ok, without his magical escapes he may not win every time, but when he did win it would be because of his great iron and short play. I guess the point of this thread for me was that I was disappointed he felt the need to behave like this amongst 'friends' and also disappointed with myself for letting him get to me for a couple of holes.

Paul, well done for self restraint. I'll play with anyone but I will not tolerate *rseholes who are not still and silent  on the tee, or whilst I'm addressing any shot for that matter. It's obvious you're playing with the club clown (there's usually one) they genuinely think they're funny and have a few loyal misfits that turn a blind eye to the  cheating though I'm glad that you played well and he got pissed off, well done. Steer clear from him it might be contageous.

Well restrained paul, though you do find one or two of these everywhere. It is amazing how some balls hit right into the woods appear on a nice bit of fairway just to the side, he should tell you what ball and number/marking he is playying with when you tee off on the first, that way you can go in the woods and help him look for his orriginal ball, not the one that has fallen through a hole in his pocket. The not marking your scores till two holes after would be dodgy as well a sure sign of him trying to cheet. The otherone you have to watch out for is when you say what did you get there and the reply is was it a 5 or a 6 ermmm you can almost garantee it was a 6 but they will say 5.
As for the penalty drops the safest way is just to play the ball as it lies.

Its hard not to let these people get to you, and I tend to play a little gamesman ship back at them, but only if i know there a **ob.

As in the opening door variety?

Golf is about sportmanship and not only would I refuse to play with him, I would also complain to the club / other players!

I have to say the Golfshake events I've played in have been great. People know the rules and play by them, give plenty of banter that makes for a really relaxed atmosphere, but respect the etiquette of the game. Credit to the whole Golfshake community.

Personally I would have said something to the bloke.

Winning is more satisfying if (a) you know you've done it honestly and (b) you've known what it is to lose. I know, after my wooden spoon in Portugal and first prize at the Belfry. Sounds like this guy has never lost in his life, but he's only cheating himself.

I used to play a lot of matchplay and there was always one bloke that used to wear white shoes and stand right side back of me and on my backswing he'd move his right foot. I was only15 so felt I couldn't say anything to him as he was a respected full member and didn't know about trying to put people off and lets be honest it's not gamesmanship or banter.

If winning meant you had to do that it's a shallow victory. Not that he ever beat me anyway.

He sounds like the "only child" kid at school, you know the one! His mammy and daddy made sure he had all the best toys, bikes, scaletrix, but spat his dummy out when you took the ball of him in p.e. proper feet stamping the lot!

Personally i would have taken him to one side and..................................

Asked him what was he trying to achieve by bullsh##ing himself and everyone else when we all know what he's up to and basically you don't look big, you don't look clever and we all think your a t##t for doing it so drop it and you'll probably enjoy the game more and your so-called mates might actually have some real respect for you

I played with one guy and several times he left his putt a foot or foot and a half short so we just said 'pick it up you can have it'. (was only a friendly)

A few holes later we were wandering how is wayward tee shots and lost balls were only resulting in bogies and sometimes scrapping par. After a little discussion it turned out he thought when we were telling him to pick it up meant that he didnt have to count it LOL. Was all friendly and no head banging occured ;-)

Hi Paul, I had a not to dissimilar experience when playing a 3 ball with a friend and a friend of his. My frined told me before that this guy always does the scores, decides the handicaps and somhow always manages to just win. I was playing of 28 at the time and hit my first drive down the middle which meant my handicap was then 24, and when I pared the first my handicap was docked to 22. I birdied the 2nd and my handicap was cut again to 18 and I told the guy that I was honoured that he thought I was as good as him despite me only playing for 2 months and he had been playing for 20 years which didn't go down too well. The rest of my round didn't go quite as well, but I enjoyed asking the guy how many he had taken when I knew he was declaring less shots than he had played and getting my partner to askhim again just after. My partner had always expected this guy cheated but was never sure and we counted more shots on several holes and pretty much exposed him so now we always have a good laugh about it. I also saw this guy counting one less when he missed a putt from 2ft several times effectively declaring his penultimate shot as a 'gimmie'.

I think exposing these people in front of their peers is the best course of action although with the guy you mention calling '3 off the tee' as you are standing over the ball is just not on as it interferes with your game not just his own. I like a bit of banter but it always stops once the pre shot routine has started and I think I would have had to say something to the guy or completely mugged him off to the point where him stopped, but I guess some people are always going to behave in this way and it just shows them up as them wanting to (and pretneding) be something that they are not capable of.

Good luck for future games Paul - fortunately there are more decent people than W***ers like this that I have met since I started playing!!

Golf is as much about fairplay as anything else in my eyes. I've only been playing for a couple of years and am still pretty poor I keep trying, keep enjoying it and have never once marked my card wrong (as bad they are)
