East Mids Summer Knockout MatchPlay Challenge
Anyone fancy planning in a knockout mathcplay event over the summer months for those around the East Midlands region ?
This is in no way competition to Al Bostock's Winter and Summer league but hopefully something to run along side. And hopefully a bit of fun and banter and games in a different format for those of us not members of golf clubs.
My thoughts:
- Max 64 players
- Matches played between 2 players in matchplay format
- could be an option for teams of 2 instead ?
- could be an option for teams of 2 instead ?
- For the 2 players reaching the final it would be 6 games
- Players arrange and fund games between themselves
- Would run from Apr-Sep, thus given players a month to arrange and compete iin each match
- If you lose you get knocked out that's me gone in the first round
- No shows also result in automatic promotion to next round
Pretty simple really. Any takers ?

There had been talk about a league matchplay competition a while back around the East Mids called the 3 Counties Challenge but this is not as easy to manage plus Al is running a great set events for those in the East Mids anyway.
Regards, Darren.

What's the dark side ?

Great idea Darren.
How far does the 'East Midlands' region extend? Are you limiting to certain counties?

Open to suggestions but Al is banned from posting comments on County splits
I guess the M1 is a good split and then what people are willing to travel. I guess a snag could be courses where someone may have an home advantage, the thought way back when it was the County Challenges was home and away type matches.
To keep this simple though it may work best with the 1 match with an agreed venue maybe neutral with the 2 players.
With the last point in mind and the M1 I guess it's not neccessarily restricted to East Mids or counties. Someone in South Leics could travel an hour up the M1 and hit Yorkshire almost. I guess we all just have to agree to limit travel time and not be to wide a range.

as an idea perhaps you could pick a centre point for east midlands region and then say entrants need to live within 1 hour of that location and also be willing to travel upto 1 hour to play a match?

What about this then Dan ? Central point is J25/J26 of M1, sorry I happen to be near by. And Al Bostock's shown us all the fantastic courses up and down the M1
Pretty much from J25/26 you can get to most of this area within an hour

Cool. I know Tim and I pretty much live at the J25 but from this point it gave good transport links via major routes ie M1 etc

Cracking idea Darren! I'd definitely go for a pairs comp.

Hmm, singles or pairs? Can't make up my mind which I'd rather do. The single does have it's appeal, although I've never done a solo matchplay game with the gloves off, And then with pairs there's someone else to blame....
Only problem I can see is getting truly neutral venues for the early rounds - I can't imagine that there are many courses around here that not one of us has played at.

Singles is easier to organise. Could have a draw so that one player is at home and therefore chooses the venue.

On reflection singles is probably better. Would there be any reason why four players couldn't go out at the same time (like a fourball) but still play as two matchplay games?
