How far can you go with cleaning your clubs whilst actually playing a round of golf? When I play golf I have a couple of towels to wipe my clubs with, and then on the tee I might stand there with a tee and clean the grooves. But could I take my little nylon/steel brush with me and use it during a competive round? I've looked in the rule book but I couldn't find anything about cleaning your clubs! Russ |

Yes Russ you can, thats perfectly in the rules, u may not add anything to the club face before striking a shot, spit or water for instance but if u clean ur grooves then wipe the face clean that is no problem. |

Thank you for clearing that up for me. During my lessons with the wedges I've been told to try and take a divot, the only problem is that this fills the grooves up with dirt! Now I'll take my little brush with me and have nice clean grooves. Russ |

Russ, I soak the lower part of my towel in water, as soon as i've hit the shot I wipe! (no rude comments please!) as its wet it gets all the stuff out of the grooves before you have to scrape it out. Si |

Russ. You can buy a little water bottle that has a nylon brush on the head. Most good golf stores stock them. I put a tiny bit of washing up liquid in and top up with water. This gets the muck out of the grooves a treat. |

The pros caddies clean their masters club after each shot, a miss hit due to a bit of dirt or mud on the club face could result in the difference between several thousand dollars / euros. |

out of interest, why can you not spit on your club to clean it but can use a wet towel? |

Will be interested to hear the answer Dennis, as that is what I do right now! |

I think it is because spit is seen as a lubricant. Even if you wipe it off with a towel afterwards, there may still be a residue left. This could be deemed to be an added coating to the face of the club and so changing a characturistic of the club. The same goes for pouring water over the club, if the water is not completely removed then there will be an added film on the face. Obviously if it is raining then you have little control over what is on the face of your club. |

Russ I use one of those pins they use for notice boards, works better than a tee but a b*stard if you stab your finger whilst looking for it. |

Patrick, good idea, but My thumb would be peppered with pin pricks (no comments please!) by the end of the round. Russ |
