Bandits and how we deal with them

Posted by: user52922 | Tue 16th Dec 2008 20:35 | Last Reply

I am posting what we do at our club in respect of pointing out who the bandits are

I realise that my mentioning the word seems to bring out the humourless amongst us who cannot take the joke of being called a bandit in the way it has always been intentioned.

ROLLUP BANDIT OF THE YEAR   APPEARANCES Handicap Bandit   Qtr 1 Qtr 2 Qtr 3 Qtr 4 Total Movements Ratio                                 Brian Biles 0 9 5 10 24 7 3.43 Gordon Jackson 7 5 5 1 18 5 3.6 Ian Donnison 8 8 2 7 25 6 4.17 Mark Weston 5 10 5 5 25 6 4.17 Mike Childs 10 14 10 11 45 10 4.5 Steve Beck 13 9 5 6 33 7 4.71 Curt van Eycke   10 15 11 36 7 5.14 Hannah Lindsay 4 6 7 4 21 4 5.25 Ron McKendrick 5 9 11 7 32 6 5.33 Darren Atkinson 13 14 17 15 59 11 5.36 Tom Jones 4 6 8 4 22 4 5.5 Bill Crosher 12 17 10 7 46 8 5.75 Terry Jones 3 8 7 5 23 4 5.75 Steve Allwork 3 6 3 6 18 3 6 Alan Hudson 5 11 2 0 18 3 6 Jodi Wood   7 8 3 18 3 6 Peter Parker 13 8 9 7 37 6 6.17 Nobby Allwork 7 8 4 7 26 4 6.5 Dave Spray 13 11 11 11 46 7 6.57 Phil Starmer 7 4 9 7 27 4 6.75 Dave Howell 3 9 8 9 29 4 7.25 John Treen 3 8 3 8 22 3 7.33 Guy Goodey 9 9 14 5 37 5 7.4 Domel Grewal 14 12 13 7 46 6 7.67 Dave May 11 10 7 11 39 5 7.8 Derek Payne 4 8 6 7 25 3 8.33 Clive Dixon 11 10 9 12 42 5 8.4 Jim Goodwin 2 11 10 11 34 4 8.5 Duncan Kerr 2 11 3 1 17 2 8.5 John Pettitt 12 13 6 5 36 4 9 Reg Diggins 6 8 8 2 24 2 12 Allan Paice 8 8 6 7 29 2 14.5 Joe Fitzsimmons 5 9 3 6 23 1 23 Dick Houghton 16 13 8 14 51 2 25.5 Brian Brockbank 1 11 11 10 33 1 33 Barry Morgan 9 9 11 12 41 0 0

You will have noticed that I am way down the list as a qualifier for being called a bandit and that is how I like it.

Incidently this is for our Mondays and Thursdays Roll-up where winners are punished severely in handicap cuts.

Call me thick (& you probably will)  but how is the ratio worked out?

I would not dream of doing that, John, last time I did, you threatened to knock my block off.

It is the number of times one has played divided by the number of times ones handicap has been cut.

It is easy to see who has been winning the money most of the time. We do have two divisions 0-18 and 19-36 just to give the lower handicaps a chance.

I am quite sure that those who know they are bandits could not care less, those of us who lose our money most weeks just congratulate the winner and shrug our shoulders.

There is always a bit of banter but none of it is serious.

This was yesterdays roll-up report and as one can see full of banditry.

Hi My thanks to Darren for forwarding the scoring for Monday.  Very honest of him given his own score! No sooner have we awarded the 2008 Bandit of the Year when another contender hove into view with Sean M recording a win in Group 1 with a 44 and the pleasure of playing off 14 for his next game.  Darren had the frustration of receiving a cut without winning with his 41.  In fact there was very good scoring across the board so it must be the warm dry weather that brings out the best in you all. In Group 2 we had another runaway winner with Ian T who received a mere 3 point handicap cut.  (I have no contact details for him so he will not be officially aware of this!).  Jodi was once again the bridesmaid in Group 2 but his 1 point cut promotes him to Group 1 next time.  Perhaps you luck will be better there Jodi. I hope that the course is booked for next Monday with the first 09.30-10.30 block booking (I will check tomorrow) so look forward to seeing all you tigers then. A Merry Christmas to all you swingers and clubbers. Best Wishes Mike

Wayne, yes will add but maybe just within the groups/society functionality.  Maybe too much for the overall site.

I do have a similar list for handicaps and over the last year the average handicap adjustment on golfshake.com from Jan to Dec is about 3 shots.  So track your scores on golfshake.com and save yourself 3 shots

Well David, Lyndon Williams is obviously a cheat as twice in a row he has played nine better than his handicap.

Looking at all the scores they all need a drastic cut in handicap. You don't stand a chance in that group and neither would I.

Danny,The Hcp hasn't moved as they are non qualifing as they are comps under our winter local rule which is pick and place throuh out the course as it gets very wet, or as i call pick and cheat. The above list are not buddies they are fellow club members a couple on the list are bods M Morris R Smith and Billy Ridler who has asked for his  hcp to be dropped ,The new club Captain has now started dropping some of these guys on general play. Here is the latest comp just put on the web They have now dropped Lyndon ( I don't know him must be a recent member)3 shots and  hey he has still played better by 9 shots

We see this sort of cheating at our club, in winter the "pro" tee's are removed and the yellows are used for the comps and all the comps are non h.c. tracked, you would'nt believe the silly scores that win these autumn/winter sweeps. For example 40 plus pionts off 3/4 h.c. regularly wins these things, if you're an honest player you have no chance of winning so we never bother to enter, shame really.

David these scores are pretty high, imo, off full h.c. never mind 3/4. In the summer I won a comp with a net 68 and got 3rd in another with a net 72 so these players must cultivate a false h.c. during the h.c. tracked summer months and just wait for the cash prizes in the winter comps. Personally I think the club should get a grip of this and stop it, but I don't know how they could do it, obviously its not just a problem with my club judging by the above posts.

Ha ha, serves him right!

Must admit I have been on the receiving end of the NZ handicapping system in another way:  I went (back) home after an extended stint in the UK having played very little golf over here.  I joined back at my old club which had converted to the new system and resumed on my old handicap (7 at the time) which I struggled to play to.  I stayed on this for about 8 months having played only 3 rounds of golf (a rugby season was in between!) with scores of 73 (Feb, and one of those dream rounds), 91 and 93 (both about Sep).

After putting in the 3rd card I got cut to a 4.3!!!  Apparently you get handicapped on the best of 3 cards when resuming a handicap....took a while and a great deal of practice to get back to a "comfortable" 7.3...

Dave,

How the hell can you score above 45 points let alone score 54 points!!!

The handicaps are abviousley wrong & someone needs to cut them on general play.

John.

He has been cut by 4 on general play somethings not right, but most won't move as it's a non qualifier .I would have to shoot a 58 to win & 65 gross to come 3rd  and they wonder why most of the clubs single figure's don't enter these silly winter comps.

Half of the players scoring inside their handicap is ridiculous.  A couple in the low 40's is feasible in such a large field, but 27 players scoring 40+!!!!  If I were a single figure member, I'd be joining a new club.  The top 5 are cheats with false handicaps.

Gross 75 Darren his Hcp was 24 cut to 19.5 , only 18 shots better than hcp. He would have been cut 5.4 if a qualifier but hey have cut him 4 on general play. It's all mallarchy either way .  I played the same course myself Saturday in a team match I was +3 for 16 holes which is where my match finished. Top score at my other club that I'm a member of was 38pts. I hope my maths are correct.

Is it a particularly easy course Dave or does it favour a certain type of player e.g. big hitters can find most greens off the tee?

Being off 24 and playing to 15 is about acdeptable as a one-off round.  Being off 24 and playing to 6 means he is a cheat.  I would refuse to play in any comp that he was in and he should be up in front of the committee.

All winter there are no bunkers in play and its pick, clean and place throughout the course and plays about 300yrds shorter. The open championship on average produces a gross score of 70 from scratch or very low hcp players ,we have had one at 64 which raised a  few eyebrows.I played that day and the course was there for the taking no defence anywhere and not a breath of fresh air and sun on your back. I had second best nett 63 that year so must have played quite easy. I would say more quirky than anything bogies follow birdies if you get my drift.Kev or JP might analyze it from a neutral perspective but regardless those scores are making the club look ridiculous
