OK......You have to remember, with these type of shots, that the ball will roll after the first bounce...General rule of thumb is that if you chip the ball, say, 10ft it will roll for about 20ft, depending on the speed of the green etc...

Now...If you are trying to hit the ball and make it stop stone dead...Then, for the moment anyway, don't even try...For a start you need a club, or clubs, that have really clean and sharp grooves...Spin miled faces are even better...But no matter how good the clubs are, unless you make a precise contact with the ball first using a down and through shot you won't have a snowball in hells chance of pulling of the shot....Unless you practice, practice, practice and then practice some more....This is why the short game is so vitally important in bringing your handicap down..

First Alex, you have to realise that, like most of us, you are not Tiger and therefore cannot stop the ball on a sixpence (let alone get backspin!).  As Old Man Marshall has said, the ball will always run after pitching.  The idea is to accept this and not to try to pitch the ball on the flag, but part way there so that the ball rolls to the flag.  The amount of roll will depend on the club you use with a lower loft running further (an 8 iron will run further than a pitching wedge).

As a general rule of thumb, I find if you chip and run with a 9 iron, it will roll about the same distance as it flies.  This means you need to aim to bounce it about half way to the hole.  I try to pick a club that means I need to pitch just on the green as you get a truer bounce and roll than if you pitch on the apron.

I recommend using a putting stroke for a chip and run as it will give you a mor consistent result.  Oh, and remember to adjust your aim to allow for the borrow as you would for a putt.

the most importat thing in generating spin is the ball - if your not using a soft ball your buggered before you even get to technique.

The idea of pitch & chip & run shots is that they do release. Chip'n'run shots will release the most & pitch shots will bounce then release but check up sooner.

However, clubhead speed, well maintained groves & for that matter keeping them clean, or even the grind on the face with some irons will make a difference.

If you are wanting a shot that checks up its going to be a lob wedge, or a parachute shot with an opened faced club, wher the groves will cut across the ball, but unless suficient clubhead speed through impact then its all for nothing.

Though to reiterate my first point generally unless its with a club of high loft a ball is meant to release with chip & pitch shots & you should be thinking of landing zones of where you need the ball to land for the club you have in hand, as another poster mentioned a 9 iron or PW will release about as much as it flies & is meant to certainly with chip'n'run shots.

although the high flying lob and stop shot looks good, you should only really think about using it if thats your last resort. Like over a bunker with little green to work with. Not been disrispectfull but for us high handicappers its a 1 in 50 shot of coming off most of the time it will be duffed. The safer shot would just be trying to get the shot on the green.

Bump and run shots can be really effective aim to get the ball to bounce just on the green and then roll to the hole using different clubs will give different lenght rolls. 7 iron for long roll 9 iron for half and half 56* for about 1/4 of roll.
