I want to do this to help my putter allignment but cant work out how to make sure I am going to draw the line straight and in the right place.

Does anyone else do this and how do they do it?

You can buy a "line-m-up" golfing gadget which includes a plastic clip with an elogate slit in which clips onto your gofl ball and your then run a marker pen along the slit to mark a perect straight line on the ball.

Lots of people use them and they are very useful, you should be able to get one from any decent well-stocked pro-shop or JJB Sports, etc. for less than £5.

I have a friend who does it all free hand. He draws two lines, one red and one green, and then scrawls his initials in massive letters. Looks awful, but the advantage is no-one in their right mind nicks his ball because they wouldn't be seen dead playing with it themselves!

Try lining up with the balls name - works just like a line....

I find it a waste of time marking lines on. Keep losing the buggers!  I know Dave started a thread about how long it would take him to lose 12 balls, well I have yet to complete a single round of golf without losing at least 1 ball.

Another reason why I buy "lake" balls. keeps cost down.

surely drawing a line on a ball to help put straight is cheating?

Why?  Etiquette dictates that you put a unique mark on your ball to identify it as yours and a Pro V1 comes with one on it specifically to aid putter alignment.  Any advantage you can legally get should be taken IMO; the game is hard enough as it is.

Is there a legal limit to how big a mark can be?

I put 3 dots in a triangle around the number on the ball to identify it's mine, and for alignment I use the wording "AD-333" with an arrow either side that's already on the ball.

For what it's worth I never use alignment marks, I find them distracting.  I always rotate the ball so that no marks or logo's show upwards...

You can colour it in if you want Lee.  Best you ask an adult to help you though.

I use the < NXT > that's on the ball already to align directly at the hole so I can check my borrow.  I also use this as a focus point as I try to keep my bloody head still.

along with your legs, knees, hips and woopsie daisy, god your like Mr Whippy chris.

Last time you were on the Tee you won the All England Dance Competition and you'd only tee'd the ball up

My breakdancing days coming back to haunt me.

Mr Whippy is my Friday night alter ego at the fetish club.  How did you know?  Are you the one being led around on a dog lead with the gimp mask on?  I didn't recognise you - the leather isn't in your normal acid trip flashback colours.

My remaining Srixons already have a line of sorts but my problem with using it (which I try to do) is that I struggle sometimes lining it up! I need to be a bit further back to see the putting line, so when I'm crouching down replacing my ball, I lose the line!

I could be replacing, standing up, replacing, standing up, all day long!

I add a line on one side and my initial on the other.  The line halps me focus on striking through the ball rather than punching it.  It has improved my putting stroke a lot as I try and make the line on the top of my putt pass throug the line on the ball.

I can't get used tot he aligment aid on the Pro-V1, or drawing a line on the ball. I find that I struggle to line the ball up to the hole properly, so when I stand up to it with my putter I am either ligned up wrong, or have to re-mark the ball to correct it. Cba with all that. So, I bought a Ping Ug-Le putter which has a bigg ass line down it, and is easy to line up. Like Tim, I then have no marks showing on the ball when I address it, so no distractions.

If you need a line, then the tools mentioned already should suffice. And regarding ball markings, there is a Yank who lets his kids "design" his golf balls, and when they are finished there isn't much white left showing. He uses them in pro competitions, so I don't think there is a rule on it all.

Most balls have their own alighnment aid already printed on them these days, but unless you line up with the line you want properly & accurately, it really just ends up being a distraction in that you instinctively see the line of the putt & yet you might have lined up the ball aiming a fraction differently.

Lining up putts with an artificial line on the ball really just gets in the way of natural instict, unless of course you struggle to see the line of a putt when you are over a ball, in which case go with lining up with the preprinted line or word on the ball, or draw your own.

Thing is, if something ain't broke don't try & fix it, hence why my usually good putting has exited stage left recently. Because I just can't help tinkering.

I must admit when i can be bothered i put a full line around my balls.

there is no doubt in my mind it helps, it also shows if you make a good contact as the ball rolls sweetly and you can see the line rotate.

apparently a lot ofmissed putts inside 6 feet can be caused by slicing the ball, often the golfer is completely unaware of this but a line on the ball can clearly indicate a good strike.

As for help with alignment, works on driving as well, can help you see a point over which you should it (and if the driver is square at setup). the pros do it so why not
