Right, I'm sure this has been posted before but I need to get it off my chest. I've been watching a lot of the US open this week on Sky and amd getting hacked off well and truly (a) by the crowd and (b) by the commentators.

Firstly the crowd. Every shot these days it seems, be it 40 yards from the pin or 600 some moronic imbecilic loser idiot has to shout "Get in the hole!!!!" in a ridiculous way only (and I dont want to sound anti-american here) and american could.  Its ridiculous and if I were the golfer I would be turning round and telling them....I'm sure I'd be less popular than Poulter in days

Secondly the commentators. I know that Peter allis is on side with me about the "Get in the hole" shouts nbut he has fallen foul of another americanism himself without realising. What is it? calling a shot a "golf shot" is what it is. We get comments like "what a wonderful golf shot that was" - well lets face it - its not going to be a cricket shot is it now???? So why the need to clarify that its golf we're watching??? I would hope we all know that!!!!

ARGGHHHH!!!! these things make my blood boil.

Anyway, thanks for rading my rant, I shall sign off now and curl into a ball and rock myself to sleep.

Tend to agree with you Chris, gets up my nose as well.  What I did think was funny watching it last night was that there was several thousand people following Woods, spraying drives around in a way that I'd be worried about, but when it cut back to Mediate or Westwood it was as deserted as our Sunday afternoon rounds (almost)!

Ah well, such is celebrity.

If Woods wasn't playing and in contention there is no way I'd be staying up till way past 3am every night.

No doubt about it Woods sells tickets and draws the galleries. I wouldn't expect Westwood & Jimenez to have had a huge following with the exception of any travelling European Fans.

It was just really nice after 2 months with little excitement in the Golf World to see Woods back and hear the chorus of "Tiger's gonna get you." from the Gallery, aimed at Westwoods group and also Mediate's.

totally agree with you on the "get in the hole!!" last night/this morning i heard it being screamed when Tiger sent yet another drive on a  500 odd yard par 5  off the tee 60 yards right! unless they are all leftie fans and actually want tiger to put it into a woodpecker hole in one of the trees!!!

On a side note last night was the first time i have stayed up and watched it all "live" and i was not disapointed one bit, for as bad as tiger was he was also just as majestic when he had to be! that chip on the 17th!!!!

Think it may be a little different with westwood with him though, esp if he has to really push himself and his knee!!

bring on tonight and the open!

Alps I think it'd be great if during a Pro's downswing all the gallery chant, "SHANK!" at the same time to see if that puts more pressure on them.

Like the SHANK shout call, cant imagine the pro's would lik it much though ;-)

Yeah watching Tiger playing the way he is with that injured knee is amazing. Some of his shouts have been bsolutely outstanding. wont stop me rooting for Westwood tonight though!!

I read on a website a few days ago that the trend for shouting 'get in the hole' is as a result of people videoing the days play and wanting to hear themselves shouting when they play it back - sad but apparently true

I don't think calling a 'Golf Shot' is a bad thing. Highlighting to the viewers that someones worked the ball, been creative and done something extraordinary isn't a bad thing.

What a bunker shot by Woods on 15th. Shame he missed the putt, lost the hole and the lead. This is a close game now.

Woods just on green on 16th, Mediate not, but Tiger with it all to do.

I dont mind a good shot being called at all, in fact would encourage it. Its the qualification of "golf" that has me confused and frustrated....

crackin putt from Mediate and he seems to have a genuine love of golf and isnt just concentrating on the money as some golfers would.

It stems from what the Golfing Commentators have been saying for a while that the Pros today don't play 'Golf' shots anymore. They don't have the range or imagination to work a ball around a tricky course or in tough conditions. Peter Allis was very outspoken  on it during the BMW. So when they or Harmon or the other guys comment on a 'Golf Shot' its something a bit different from the norm.

I suspected as much Chris but considering the commentators saying that, they dont half use the term a lot....so obviouslt the pros are taking true shots...either that or they are just over-using it?

I'd lilke to see Mediate win. Must as I like Tiger I'm afraid the hyperbole would be too much. Tony Jacklin called him a hero yesterday - people who rescue babies from burning buildings are heroes, men who win golf tournaments with bad knees are not I'm afraid. Keep it in perspective.

Anyway it looks like he's running out of holes but I wouldn't bet against an eagle at 18th............

Trouble is they've said 18 is plaing short today, even Rocco can reach in two. Think Woods has to Eagle at worst to win this.

Well I got him at 3/1 before the comp started so put £100 on him. Then on Sunday put another £72 on him at 8/12 and also £10 at 4/1 for him to make a Double Bogey in the last round. So I'm nicely in profit for the weekend.

Chris, this comment was posted on my other favorite site, chiptalk.net.....http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/general-topics/50370-us-open-pet-
peeves.html

I just love this one....

Excerpt below:

My son and I were at the Northern Trust Open this year at Riviera. Watching some nice play on Saturday morning and some guy standing next to us at a par 4 tee box yelled out the ole "Get in the hole!!" after Mickelson tee'd off.

My son (Age17) just turned his head to him (Like eveyone else).. and said clamly, "It's a Par 4... Act like you've been to a golf tourney before today, you douche." Everyone around us, including myself starting laughing like crazy. The guy just walked off... It probably helped that my son towered over the guy.

Closest thing I've seen to that was at the Open Last Year on the 9th Tee on Friday. Some drunken idiotic Scots fellow decided to make a arse of himself by shouting rubbish at the guys on the tee. He stopped Stewart Cink several times by shouting for him to hit it into the trees or out of bounds. Monty then come over and in his angry way said, "That's enough! We don't need any of that. Shut up and grow up!" and then Monty locked onto him with the Monty Stare. I don't know what the guy must have felt but even those of us stood witnessing the altercation and the stare felt a chill run down our spines like someone had walked over our graves.

The Monty Stare is something I wouldn't want to receive directly.

Funnier still was a couple of groups before that Faldo has engaged the same spectator in conversation using the same drunken scottish twang to raise a giggle out of the gallery. Though he did at one point turn round and ask if anyone could translate what the fellow had said.
