Hi there

In my golf bag i carry the Dunlop CUBE Driver which replaced my Howson Derby as soon as i got it as a Xmas present last year.

I tried it out at my local range a few weeks ago and it is fantastic. The driver was from Sports world and cost me £40 but it was worth is as i hit about 50% of my drives down the middle of the range.

The Driver has 10.5* of loft and it sounds like a cannon when hit pure.

Chris Brannon

I've been experimenting with a few drivers over the last few months with lofts of 8.5 (the Adams), 9.5 (Cleveland Launcher / Callaway X) and 10.5 (Ping G5 / Mizuno MX560). I found I hit the 10.5's too high losing distance, whilst the 9.5's were both nice (the Callaway edging it) I kept coming back to the Adams. I only got the 8.5 (as opposed to 9.5) as they were the last ones left on Clearout - if a 9.5 crops up somewhere with the same shaft I would probably grab it.

Interesting the Rapture has 2 degrees more loft in reality. If the G5 is similar it may explain why I hit it very high. A few years back Ping used to mark their drivers with "effective trajectory (ET)" which was much lower than the actual loft. I wonder if they still do that but just dropped the ET tag? It certainy looks more than 2 degrees different to the Adams.

Now when i catch it nice i love it, but have a tendency to leave the face open at impact so i mainly see the right side of many courses although reading Dave finding above the fact that the face is 1* open doesn't help

Paul, dave's post isn't saying that all the Tour Burners are a degree open, it's more that a lot of clubs are different from what's written on the club.

Some are open, some are closed, some are square - he's highlighting that clubs that are supposed to be the same, are often different - these differences are not from model to model - it's club to club!

So yours may not be open, or closed - it could be perfect!

:D

Jonny,

I know where your coming from cheeky b##### but I've had a few low handicappers look and play the driver and they we're all of the opinion that its slightly open and the ball flight suggests this also.

Paul Hindmarsh for one tried it at Pype Hayes as he said it looked open at address, he swung it and caught it straight out the middle but the ball flight was slight fade and Paul plays with a draw.

Dave - I'm now gaming the titleist 909 D2 with Aldila Voodoo Stiff shaft (titty one though).

Spin reduced by 1200rpm according to the launch monitor - I didn't notice much difference over the first 2 or 3 rounds, but now loving it - I can hit that without having to get handsy, and the strike feels solid.

Been pretty good so far Dave, the operator being it's only fault in my book. Great distance and a very penatrating flight, something that I could't get with an OEM club. Both the Ping G10 and TM Tour Burner balooned in the air with stiff shafts and I tried the G10 with a Pro-Launch red, but that didn't really help any either. The set up of the Geek with the Bryant Brothers shaft is a great one for me. And the big one is VFM, this is the reason I'm more attricted to components now as they undercut the big manufacturers and still produce great clubs.

Music to my ears Mark I only wish more people switched on to whats out there in the component world instead of paying extorsionate prices for the OEM's.Have had plenty of experience with Geek but haven't tried the BB.Good luck with your swing chages.

Apparently the profile of the BB is very close to the Matrix Ozik Code 7. I have no clue what it means and the graphs  and numbers I've see tell me bugger all, but considering one is 200 or 300 quid and the BB is about 80 it has good VFM.

Was gonna get the Big Bertha Diablo, but had a last minute change of heart and went with the R9.

Was out with it yesterday, very impressed. Ball flight was excellent and gained about 20/30 yards (compared to my MD Superstrong). Just ashamed I only had 9 holes with it, could have carried on for hours!!!

Amazing golf club.

Cleveland Hibore XL Super Loft with fit on gold shaft. I was never able to hit a driver till I picked up this club. For me its amazing- straight high and pretty long. I usually hit around 220 with it, but last round I hit two shots over 265 right down the middle. Only missed 2 fairways the whole day. I know, I know, guys will post about how they all can hit 300 plus, but I don't care. I will take 230 right down the middle all day long.

Looking to get the same club with a lower loft (10.5-11.5) now that I have confidence with it. Can't say enough good things about it.

Can't say I've ever been one for lessons, David. Had one and I have never seen someone look so disinterested in what they are doing than the pro, and everything he told me to do was total rubbish anyway.

Im at a point now where I know what I've done wrong, its just stopping doing it that is the problem! And thats where i think the R9 was the best club for me. I can set it for a slight draw, then place the heavier weight in the heel, and the result has been great. When i start hitting the ball differently i can re-adjust it. Am out with it again tomorrow so will have a clearer idea of what it doing for me.

Patrick,

Love your post and up to a point I totally agree. I well recall a Longdrive competition sponsored by Ping (I think) and in the qualifying rounds we all had to use 45" stock Ping drivers and the young guys were flying their drives well through 300 yards of carry into a strong headwind and they were holding back so as to not overpower the shafts.

I have also met several golfers who boast that they can hit their drives further with their child's short driver with (for them) a very whippy shaft.

So yes, a little money can go a long way in golf.

At the end of the day it depends what "trick" one is attempting. A £10. driver may be capable of getting a golfer within 25 yards of their full potential, and so such may be argued as being quite acceptable as both cost and result are important factors.

But for other golfers a 25 yards loss of distance would be unbearable. It's horses for courses. And, just like buying a motor car a Lada will do the trick. But is it a good enough trick?

If our paths cross later this year then how about us swopping drivers on the range for fun? I don't think that I've ever seen a £10. driver, let alone swung one and I'm a sponge for new golfing experiences! If it's better than what I use I may make you an offer.

When I first bought my nike sumo for £140 I thought it was the dogs doodahs, then a mate of mine let me have a go with a slazenger driver he bought new for £15, it went just as far and straight as mine, so I could have saved £125 if I had tried a cheepie first. I still love my nike as I hit it consistantly well. but next time I'm in the market for a new driver I'll certainly look at the cheaper end first.

P.s Pat, you hit your 1 iron so well I thought you were going to leave your driver in the garage..!!??

Sanders, yes I agree your point. If I try to leather it I will lose my timing. I used to use an old wilson 1200 which I swore by but this square driver, when I'm swinging well, will always give me a shout for my second to reach most par fives so I've come to rely on it however when not going well I SHOULD leave it in the garage but you know how it is.... we're never satisfied with what we have, give it that extra 10% and lose the whole setup (well I do anyway).

Sanders Longdrive
Handicap :

Patrick,

I much preferred the 1960s when par fives played like par 5s: Driver, spoon, plus 9 iron. Three good shots to get at the pin, not a driver and a 6 iron.   In those days when either Arnold or Jack shot 18 under for four rounds (which they often did) it required SERIOUS talent, not ridiculously powerful equipment.

Whilst I love both golf and longdrive I personally believe that the two should not be mixed. Anyone driving more than 280 yards on the golf course should be made to kick his ball back to a chalk 280 yards line from where his second shot should be played.

I have taken to building persimmon drivers for fun but the problem is that with modern shafts they still hit a bally mile! But I WILL find a way to re-create the golfing fun of the old days. I don't care about effect on scores.

I`ve just bought a Nike SQ Dymo square headed driver - 10.5 * Regular shaft to replace my old Nike 400cc Titanium driver - 9* Stiff shaft. With the new driver I hit about 240yds with a high ball flight whereas with the old one I hit about 220yds with a lowish flight . I decided to change as now I`m getting on a bit (pushing 59) I don`t swing as fast as I used to so I bought a 10.5* regular shafted driver to help get a bit more whip through the ball.
