Last week i shot nett 72 which is 2 over par from a 18 handicap in a qualifying compertition my normal handicap is 27. Had to play off 18 as that was teh max for the compertition. Thought id get cut 2 if not 3 shots. Go in yesterday to find my handicap still the same 27. Asking to make sure get told that with it been a qualifying compertition they cant cut you?

If it was me I'd complain, the whole purpose of my game is to be consistant enough for the Handicap level to drop

What was the CSS for the Qualifying Competition Matt?

Chances are the Competition Secretary has overlooked the fact you played off 18 rather then 27, but the CSS may have been something like 69 which means you'd have played to the buffer zone for an 18 handicap. What he needs to do is re-work it with your handicap of 27 and then adjust your handicap by 0.4 for every shot you are under the CSS.

CSS - Competition Scratch Score thats basically the Standard Scratch Score (SSS) for that particular day. Thats what they'll use to adjust your handicap with.

I worked it out that you should now be 24.5 based on SSs or CSS of 69

Matt,

Are you sure they said it was a qualifying competiton and not a NON qualifying competetion.

I think with a non qualifying competition you'll find that you won't get cut.

They normally only tell you when its NON qualifying

Erm i cant remember what they said to be honest could have been either, It was a compertition to qualify for the matchplay compertiton the top 64 go through which i made.
It was stroke play and i think the winner would have got some money to as well as qualifying for the match play stage.

Sometimes at my club if weather conditions dictate and they have to play us off the ordinary mens tees as opposed to the competition tees, or if there are temporary greens etc then the competition is then termed a NON qualifying competition for handicap purposes, although you may still qualify for the next stage of a sponsored competition.

Sounds like you may have confused the two types of qualifying, Handicap qualifying and Sponsored event qualifying

Can't see any reason why it wasn't but its something you'll have to ask your competition committee about then

Matt, there is no pleasure in winning at golf with a handicap as high as yours. Strive to get it lower and then the satisfaction will be enormous.

Chances are then it was a Non-Handicap Qualifying Event. However in this day and age that should never happen as we are all playing measured courses with SSS calculated. The excuse of winter tees or temp greens can't be used anymore or at least thats what I was told at the CONGU seminar earlier in the year. They say that every competition unless in really exceptional circumstances should be a qualifer. If not a Qualifier to the exact terms then it should be a 'Reductions Only' competition. So those who do play well can have their handicaps adjusted.

Since the outlawing of General Play Adjustments why would any club run Non-Qualifiers as this restricts golfers chances to get cut.

As we have agreed before, Chris, the whole handicap system sucks.

Matt some more info for you after posing the information to CONGU and the Handicapmaster Organisation:

It is possible to run Stableford competitions, where players do not receive full handicap allowance, as handicap qualifiers within the CONGU Unified Handicapping System.

However, for the competitions to be valid, players must use their FULL handicap when playing and scoring. The reduction in handicap may only be a recalculation of points by the committee AFTER the scores (using full handicap) have been returned and handicap adjustments processed accordingly.

The competition in the format you describe is not valid as a handicap qualifier and making handicapping adjustments based on scores where players are likely to have picked up ‘early’ is flawed. So to reiterate competitions should be played with full allowance for handicapping purposes and the committee should make the reductions afterwards for result purposes.
