I've assembled 5 of the toughest, most difficult golf courses in the US. From your experience, Which of the courses are the most toughest?

Any of them as tough as carnoustie? Or Royal St georges?

I haven't played any of those courses, but there are a couple I could recommend in Pinehurst, NC.

First is "The Pit", if for no other reason than a par 3 with an island green, followed immediately by a 200 yard carry over water for your drive at the very next hole.  The barman at our hotel (a 14 H/c) said he lost 17 golf balls on his first outing at the course!

Second is "Tobacco Road" - very much like Kiawa Island, with sand everywhere that you treat as normal playing area, i.e. you can ground your club.  Again, the barman at our hotel described it as "The Pit on steroids"!  They have a great website, with pictures of all 18 holes (mainly from the tees).

I'll just add a third recommendation from my one and only visit (so far) to Spain - Monte Mayor!  There are some serious golf holes there, but don't even think about walking the course - it's all up in the mountains, and buggies are compulsory!
