North vs South 2014 - Date plus Captains

Posted by: user8 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Tue 28th Jan 2014 21:38 | Last Reply

Hi all.

Dates: I don't normally do this but a few people have asked me about dates for the 2014 North vs South with possible date clashes. I've about 90% confirmed the 2014 event with the venue likely being in Northants.

Therefore click the link below and you can 'privately' let me know any dates you can't do, hopefully meaning that I can ensure we have a date that fits with the majority.

Captains: Any nominations for 2014 Captains for either side please let me know although I do believe that nominations had been put forward following the 2013 event.

Thanks in advance, I'm hoping to confirm within the next few days which will then allow time to sort a few other Golfshake days out and announce early Feb.

Regards, Darren.

I think us Northerners have already decided on our Captain. We'll have a meeting in Portugal to confirm it as we'll have three former Captains there..

Trying to confirm ASAP. It was all but confirmed for June but we ran into a few minor issues which pushed back announcing anything

Location mid way in the country - divide split is prob J10 of M40 to J15 of M1

Was planned for end of June but probably pushing it now due to delays so likely mid Sept again.

Looking to see if this can get squeezed in for Jun 29th/30th - short notice but fits in well with other events.

June 100% not happy, too short notice now.

Few IT issues on Friday stopped me being able to finalise last week but should be able to confirm on Monday a date in September. Location is pretty much middle of the country.

Sorry all.

Last year we had a fantastic event finding a great new format played over 45 holes with a venue that had 27 holes available.

This year I was trying to organise the perfect format, at the perfect venue and to coincide with the perfect date unfortunately various things stopped this happening resulting in various delays with the planned June date (yesterday/today) and a planned date in September.

I'm still looking into it but it's unlikely that I will be able to find the perfect solution for; format, venue, price & date but as others have said it's the event that is key and not always finding the 100% perfect solution.

I'm also taking a leaf out of Chris Perry's book for future events and will just announce venue, format, date in the future without trying to get the consensus of everyone which then just aids to the logistics of trying to organise!

Sorry again, info to follow.

Regards, Darren.

It's getting on a bit, and I suspect that most people will require a bit of notice to play.

We don't want to let it get late in the year or the weather will be against us.

Got to say that that there is a saying about arranging to have drinks in a brewery. This sums up this debacle.

This whole event is a disgusting shambles!!!

Umpteen hollow promises about details to follow in a few days...Minor glitches to sort out.

Excuses excuses excuses.

First posting about this 28th January... Does it seriously take 6 months to sort out.

September is now out for me as have had to give work notice of time off required.

Thank you so much to whoever is supposed to be arranging this...It's a joke and you should be ashamed!!!!

Nice of you to slate someone you've never met for an event you've never attended Clara. I've been to 5 of these and have organised several events myself. Organising any event is not easy and th N v S is a nightmare. Just think of the criteria:-

  1. Must have hotel that can accommodate 80 golfers + (based on experience) 20+ partners
  2. Must allow societies on Sundays & Mondays
  3. Must allow us 20 consecutive tee times at peak time on a Sunday (would you be happy if your club allowed a society that?)
  4. Must allow us 20 consecutive tee times on both days that guarantee everyone can get round (assume 5 hour round, again from experience)
  5. Must be centrally based (we've had events in both the North and South and travel times make it prohibitive for people from the other end of the country)
  6. Must be reasonably priced (say £130 max) or people can't afford it
  7. Must be a reasonable course
  8. Ideally, private dining for the Sunday evening
  9. All the above on a date that 'works' for the majority

Those are the ones that come to mind easily. We've held these in the North and the south team struggled for numbers. We played in the south and the North team struggled for numbers. We had a 'fixed' venue for a couple of years with the Abbey, but they ripped up the best hole and replaced it with an awful one, plus the condition became very poor, so people complained. We moved to a different venue last year which I thought suited us brilliantly (courses good for Matchplay too) but we hit it during late summer green work and the greens had been hollowtined and slit. Guess what, everyone said it was rubbish and we shouldn't go back

We're running out of venues to try now, and that makes it difficult to get one without compromising on something (price, quality, location, etc). Coupled with that if you knew Darren, which I'm pretty sure you don't, you would know that he does his best to please everybody, a thankless and impossible task. I happen to know how hard he is working to get this sorted and have been helping him out

The N v S is an annual event. There is only one other annual event (organised by me) and to make it happen every year is a difficult task, despite it always being at the same course at the same time of year and only a one day event. Before you call something a "disgusting shambles" you should educate yourself on how difficult putting together an event like this. Maybe then you would step down from your ivory tower

Chris,

Totally agree with you. I think Darren was let down at the last minute so it's not his fault. Would people mind if this year it didn't happen? I personally have almost run out of holiday & disposble income (& we've got La Manga in October!).

This would take a bit of pressure of Darren & allow him to organise it for the following year.

For your information Chris Perry I have met Darren several years ago at Staverton Golf Club. My uncle was playing in a Golfshake event there.

I realise the time it takes to arrange these kinds of events. I too have been involved in arranging them. Last year I had my name down to play in the North Vs South, but when I learnt it was at Hellidon Lakes I knew the state that course was in, as my Uncle lives less that 3 miles from there and he warned me it was a rubbish course. I passed this information on the the South Captain (cannot remember his name now). So in the evening after my Uncle and I had played Staverton, we went over to Hellidon to see how you were getting on.

Being informed of this is all that is necessary. Vague promises and then no information. That is the gripe Chris. Takes but a few moments to keep people updated. But that did not happen. Surely you can see that?

I happen to know a lot more that you think. For instance I know all about you annual event at Minchinhampton. I happen to arrange a lot of golfing events throughout the year, so I don't need any education thank you very much. So perhaps it is YOU that needs to be sure of your facts before you reply!

Wow, its not a qualifier to The Open for pity's sake, what's the big deal, its a fun meet where like minded people simply get together, have some fun, play some golf and spend some limited social time together, all for a knock-down price due to a organisers hard work. Whether it happens or not is neither here or their, no big deal if it doesn't happen, certainly no reflection on Darren or Golf Shake who's time is limited, especially when things change so to dissect it to suit your 'argument', is quite rude and unsympathetic. I don't remember when joining this forum and site that there is a annual North Vs South event! I'll certainly be looking out for your name and hopefully avoid you at any meets as you come across a right bundle of laughs, not!

So you've met Darren once several years ago Clara Evans. Know him so well don't you....

Right, had enough of this. As Darren is too nice to tell the truth, this is the story and situation

The event was arranged for mid-Sept. Tee times and costs were agreed and rooms were available. Captains had been informed and were starting to put their plans together. There was one detail of logistics to be sorted out. Darren had the announcement written but held off until everything was 100%. Then the venue moved the goalposts at the last minute. They changed the deal and Darren didn't think it was acceptable to all of us on here. Darren has been desperately trying to find an alternative for the last six weeks but given the criteria and short timescales it is proving very difficult to get something sorted. Myself and a few others have been trying to help out, contacting places we have used/been members of before but we are all having the same difficulty

None of this "debacle" is down to Darren. He did everything that was asked of him and got stitched by the venue. His only problem is he's too nice for his own good and would rather the abuse was directed at him than 'out' the venue for doing this to him while he tries to fix the situation.

I know the facts. For those judging without them I suggest you perhaps consider the difficult situation Darren has been trying to recover for everyone else's benefit. He gets nothing out of arranging these events and rarely even plays. All this is done for the Golfshake members and all he gets for putting himself out is abuse. All the events require hard work for no gain and I know Darren sometimes even makes a loss on them due to broken promises of attendees and venues. Maybe you should all consider that before you demand yet another pound of flesh

Personally I won't miss any of the keyboard warriors who demand everything is done to their requirements, scream and complain when they aren't happy and then give nothing back if they don't come to the event

I have no complaints against any person who tries to organise an event, having done so myself I know how hard it is.

Having attended a couple of the North v South events I know how much I enjoy participating in them.

So it would be a shame if we have to miss this year due to a venue letting us down.

Hopefully, something will be arranged and we can get it played, even if we have to cut down on the numbers to help get a venue.

I will keep watching the forum and hopefully something will appear.

Russ
