Tewkesbury Park Stay & Play Review

By: Robert Treanor | Wed 20 Mar 2024

Tewkesbury Park is a luxury family-owned destination featuring 27 holes of golf, an excellent boutique hotel and an impressive set of accompanying leisure facilities. Golfshake dispatched Ambassador Rob Treanor to experience the hotel’s modern facilities and excellent array of golf which has been judged “Highly Recommended” by Golfshake members.

Intro

It is immediately apparent Tewkesbury Park is an independently owned venue. The warmth of welcome from the staff creates an authentic and genuine care for the guest experience that is unique and a world away from the wooden corporateness of large chain hotels. The tasteful and classic furnishing is also striking on arrival, creating a feeling of quality that is replicated throughout the hotel.

The venue has 93 unique bedrooms, catering for all manner of budgets alongside an excellent restaurant and a cracking 18-hole golf course in the Deerpark. Premium but not pricey, there is tremendous value on offer here.

Facilities

Tewkesbury Park Pool

The grand entrance hall is the hub of the hotel, housing the piano bar, a warm and cosy fireplace and plenty of snugs to settle down in after a hearty day of activities. The décor is classic and smart with warm tartan patterns adding flair to the comforting softer tones.

Beyond golf, a well-equipped spa boasts a good-sized swimming pool, steam room and an outdoor hot tub and barrel sauna. This space is ideal for unwinding the muscles or for seeking some gentle relaxation before an exquisite evening meal.

Accommodation

Tewkesbury Park Bedroom

The hotel achieves a timeless look, owing to the classic styling of the décor and a warming ambience. A touch of flair is added via the inclusion of local furnishings such as the attractive tartan patterned chairs that are present throughout the hotel.

As for room options, the entry level “Just Right” standard are impressively stylish and more than adequate to keep guests feeling right at home for a long weekend. “Touch of Class” rooms offer more space, a Nespresso machine and all have French doors that lead to a private patio garden looking out towards the breath-taking views. For a real treat, opt for one of the hotel’s “Historic Suites” which have space for a chaise-longue, dressing room and opulent freestanding bath with a luxurious mirror TV in what can only be described as a cavernous bathroom!

Golf

Tewkesbury Park Golf

The Deerpark enjoys an excellent reputation with the par 72 course also a PGA tournament venue. The parkland layout weaves up, down and across the high ground on which the hotel sits proudly. Mature trees present an array of strategic challenges, forcing the golfer to play for the correct positions. In particular, the par-3s are excellent, with the signature 5th playing over a pretty pond and the daunting 10th, which starts at the top of the hill with views over the surrounding Cotswolds all the way down to a green slightly shielded by pretty trademark trees.

A full review of the course can be read HERE.

As well as the acclaimed 18-hole course, the par-3 Acorn course is an ideal location for those beginning to learn or simply for a less formal game. This inclusive setup allows children to enjoy playing at their own pace, which is an ideal way to learn about the great game.

Food

The food offering at Tewkesbury Park is genuinely outstanding. The bright and airy Mint restaurant is the focal point for breakfast and evening meal, which benefits from huge amounts of light and views across the golf course. Provenance is taken seriously here with local sourcing evident across the menu spanning the obvious meat and fish ingredients to the not-so obvious gin and tonic!

Dinner is truly an occasion; sitting in the informal ambience of the glass framed conservatory, the ever-present warmth of the staff welcome creates a very relaxing vibe. Sashimi-cut local smoked salmon, pork belly or roast cornfed chicken with truffle mousse are some of the more conventional but excellently executed dishes. Cheltenham beetroot chaat, Himalayan goat curry or chalk stream trout with squid ink tagliatelle offer more adventurous culinary options.

It almost goes without saying that the presentation of the plates is a marvel and the dining experience a very special occasion indeed. Food is truly a tremendous highlight of any stay at Tewkesbury Park.

Summary

Tewkesbury Park Hotel

This is an excellent venue. Superb golf, outstanding food and a genuinely excellent guest experience combine to ensure a fantastic break at Tewkesbury Park. The array of premium facilities has enough to keep everyone in the group very happy indeed and sure to be planning the next visit by the end of the trip…
