Hawick is a classic example of James Braid's ability to take natural features and nurture them into an interesting and engaging set of challenges for golfers.
Yes it is very hilly and a test for the legs. It also requires some local knowledge, with a handful of blind shots. But most of all a successful golfer is required to play to a strategy; evaluate different shot options; take into account the effects of sweeping gradients, and; work out where to not to go! The third in particular is a design masterpiece, a par 4 of only mediocre length that features two distinct levels of fairway. The easier option off the tee veers right to the lower level, opening up a wider angle from which to attack the green but a second shot of 180 yards or so uphill. A successful drive down the tighter line on the left might leave as little as a 9 iron approach, but getting there requires an accurate draw. Get caught between stools and the next shot has to be played from the bottom of a deep gully with the pin not visible. A peach of a hole and preamble to the stunning sequence that crosses the top tier of Vertish Hill - like walking on the roof of the world. The finishing descent is also a joy to behold, due to the charming nature of the 16th and a seriously challenging 200 yard carry (and about 150 foot drop) to the 18th. All together a fantastic golf course in a stunning setting. Well played at Hawick, James Braid.

A real surprise
This course has just six holes so we were expecting something rough and ready. Far from it. There were 6 very attractive and interesting holes beautifully presented (tees, fairways and greens). We were not bothered by having to go round three times! The only drawback is traffic noise from the M25.
The clubhouse was fine and the practice facilities excellent to go with a large pro shop. Don't be put off!

What a difference a dry spell makes ! In prolonged wet weather, this Course is not enjoyable, but in dry conditions, it's a different experience altogether. Fair greens, well cut fairways giving plenty of run, all offering real value for money.

I was able to play 9 holes here in November, there were several friendly people to chat to, before I started my game. The course is not long but has some nice par 4's and a couple of good par 3's near the end. You will not find a flat lie anywhere on the course however there are plenty of great views from anywhere on the course. The course was in decent condition (especially considering that it is November) and the greens putted well. Don't be put off by the fact this is a 9 hole course, it is a fun and challenging golf course.
