The North West of England is full of exquisite golf courses from Championship Open venues to hidden gems well worthy of recognition. To add to the golf you also have major cities such as Manchester and Liverpool to explore as well as the tranquil Cumbrian countryside.

So if you’re in the area for the weekend or a midweek getaway then here are ten of the best courses to play for under £50.

Blackburn Golf Club

Described as “Blackburn’s hidden secret,” this parkland course is a treat. As you make your way along the tightly cut fairways you can take in the views of the Pennine Hills and the Fylde coast.

The course is less than 6 miles from junction 31 on the M6 and just 3 miles from junction 6 on the M65. At just £32 on a weekday and £36 on a weekend for 18 holes, you’d be a fool not to give Blackburn Golf Club a try.

Swinton Park Golf Club

Situated between Manchester and Liverpool, Swinton Park Golf Club is a parkland golf course well worth your time. The course is known as being one of the longest and best courses in Manchester and measures at 6726 yards.

The course itself was designed in 1926 by the famous golfer and golf course designer James Braid. Its tree-lined fairways and spacious greens offer a tough test for every standard of golfer. The modern clubhouse also has its own, well renowned restaurant, The Claremont which offers views over the 18th green.

The course is situated on the A580 between Manchester and Liverpool.

Warrington Golf Club

Warrington Golf Club

Founded in 1903, Warrington Golf Club is situated at the highest point in Warrington and offers views over the town, Pennines and Welsh Hills. The course and surrounding woodland area has recently undergone improvements that have made the course a challenging but enjoyable test.

This heathland course is situated less than a mile from the M56 and a round at this challenging par 71 golf course is just £40.

Morecambe Golf Club

If you’re heading to the Lake District from the South then Morecambe Golf Club is a club you should definitely consider stopping off at. It is clear to see why Morecambe is known as the “gateway to the Lake District’ from the course as you overlook Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells.

The course, which is located on the North West tip of the Lancashire coast, was designed by Alister MacKenzie and measures at 5791. So if you’re looking for a relaxing game of golf then this par 69 golf course is a must.

Ulverston Golf Club

If you’re planning a trip to the Lake District then Ulverston Golf Club should be high on your list of courses to play. The course designed by H.S.Colt is described as “The Hidden Gem” and there are many reasons that make this course an absolute gem.

As well as a challenging 6,261 yard course, Ulverston offers stunning views of the Lakeland Fells, the quaint Cumbrian countryside and Morecambe Bay.

Bolton Old Links Golf Club

Bolton Old Links is another Alister MacKenzie design. MacKenzie used the natural contours of the land, two tiered greens and astute bunkering to make this links a tough test of golf.

The highest point of the course is the 8th tee where you can see over the surrounding counties as well as some of the contours the German Luftwaffe produced during WWII which ultimately complimented MacKenzie’s design.

Heysham Golf Club

Heysham Golf Club is very much a hidden gem. The par 70 golf course is kept in outstanding condition all year round with it’s tightly cut fairways and consistent greens. Heysham also offers splendid views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells, the Pennines and the Lune Estuary.

Heysham has a large variety of holes from long par 4s and blind par 3s which require maximum concentration. The course is within easy reach of the M6 and is near to the historic city of Lancaster.

Houghwood Golf Club

Houghwood Golf Club is a parkland golf course situated in St Helens. The course boasts to have some of the best greens in the area, which meet USGA standards to offer a fast and consistent feel all year round.

The course is on the edge of the Lancashire Plain and offers spectacular views over the Welsh Hills.

Chorley Golf Club

Chorley Golf Club is  well-established and offers an excellent challenge of golf adequate for every standard of golfer. At 6,269 yards, it is not an overly long golf course, which makes it a tough but enjoyable round of golf.

Recent improvements to the course and clubhouse, on top of the stunning views of South Lakes and North Wales, has further enhanced it standing as one of the best courses in the area.

Silverdale

Silverdale is an extremely welcoming club where visitors are embraced by the local members. The course is a strange yet challenging test of your golfing skills due to its dog legged par 4s, small greens and tree-lined holes. Silverdale is all about positioning. Hitting driver off every tee will almost certainly result in a lost ball or tough approach shot.

Silverdale train station is right on the doorstep of the golf club and is definitely the recommended mode of transport if you’re planning to play this true hidden gem. It also means that after your round everyone can enjoy an ice-cold pint as you wonder how such a short golf course can be so challenging.
