Wesselingh Hands Letters Their First Tour Victory For Over 40 Years

By: Golf Shake | Mon 10 Jun 2013

john lettersJohn Letters, the equipment brand with 95 years of clubmaking history, is celebrating after staff player Paul Wesselingh won the Handa PGA Seniors Championship at De Vere Mottram Hall.

The 2012 European Senior Tour Rookie of the Year handed the famous Scottish brand their first win on a main tour since the golden days of the early 70’s with a -20 under par total of 272 on the Mottram St Andrew course.

With rounds of 68, 70 and 70, defending Champion Wesselingh headed into the final round a shot clear of the field and gave a masterclass of golf using his Letters Equipment with a flawless closing round 64, the lowest round of the week, to seal a four shot victory over Paraguay’s Angel Franco.

The 51 year old Englishman said: “It is unbelievable; I just can’t believe I’ve done it. I couldn’t believe I’d done it last year, and I can’t believe I’ve done it again this year.”

‘Wez’ got off to the ideal start with five birdies in his first ten holes and when three more followed, on the spin from the 14th hole, there was no catching the Letters man.

“To win it two years on the trot with this quality of field is incredible. I just played the best I’ve ever played today, Last year was special because obviously it was my first one, but this one was even better because I did it in style really, and won by a reasonably good margin” added Wez.

Wesselingh first teamed up with Letters early on in the 2012 season and has never looked back. Paul was among the most consistent performers on the Seniors Tour, finishing 5th on the Order of Merit and culminated in winning the 2012 European Senior Tour Rookie of Year.

Playing the full complement of Letters equipment including Master Model Driver, fairway, Satin irons, MM grind wedges and a Golden Goose putter – Paul made the switch to John Letters after testing the products on tour and being fully custom-fitted at the John Letters performance Centre in Huddersfield.

On re-signing with Letters back in January, Wesselingh said: “I can’t speak highly enough of John Letters and their team of tour staff; they really look after me. My clubs are great and I’m delighted to continue working with them in 2013 and proud to say I’m a John Letters staff player.”

The victory and winners cheque of €48,687 catapults Wesselingh to the top of Order of Merit.

To add to the great week for Letters, fellow staff player and brand ambassador, Sam Torrance shot rounds of 69, 73, 73, and 69 to finish -8 under par and record a top ten finish.

John Andrew, Managing Director, commented: “We’re delighted for Paul and also to secure the first main tour victory for the brand in nearly forty years. We’ve made huge strides since I rescued the brand from potential obscurity in 2005. We invested significantly in our equipment, R&D and also out on-tour with other victories for the likes of Phil Archer on the Challenge Tour and Chris Hanson on the Europro; so it’s validated on days like these. It’s great to see Letters back in the winner’s circle again.”
