US Open 2013We are this week assessing the golf betting opportunities in the field for the U.S. Open, taking place on the East Course of Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania - Philadelphia.

The second major of the year is notoriously the most challenging event of the year, with par often considered an excellent score. The Merion Golf Club has not hosted this event since 1981 and will be primed for action. The course was designed from experience of English & Scottish courses, with very distinctive Scottish-style bunkers.

If goes without saying that a player who is good in the sand is a must this week. However, the key stat is GIR as if your player misses the green then they will be struggling to make par on every hole. With tight fairways you also need a fair bit of accuracy off the tee to make hitting the greens easier and helping to avoid the need for a sand save!

You may also wish to consider that Merion hosted the 2005 US Amateur Championship which was won by Edoardo Molinari. Although Edoardo is not playing this week you might want to take a look at his brother Francesco who has the same ‘straight and consistent’ genes.

If you fancy yourself as a tipster then try your luck in our free US Open tipping competition and play for your chance to win a share of £75 of prize money.

Players to watch...

Justin Rose (27/1) has played 8 events this year and finished in the top 25 in 7 of them = Mr consistent. Rose’s game looks to be made for this course as he ranks 1st for sand saves, 7th for GIR, 17th for driving accuracy and 1st for total driving. He is ready to win a major, will this be the one...

Brandt Snedeker (32/1) started the season in blistering form but has been stuttering since his win at Pebble Beach in March. However, he is a big game player and saves up his best form for the top tournaments – T6 Masters/T8 Players. Snedeker ranks 12th for GIR, 9th for driving accuracy and a respectable 26th for sand saves. We think he has the tools to go well this week.

Kevin Streelman (110/1) has had a magical season so far with a maiden victory (Tampa Bay) and 3 back-to-back top 10’s (Heritage/Wells Fargo/Players) – firing himself to 36th in the OWGR. Streelman ranks 22nd for GIR and 16th for driving accuracy so if he can stay out of the bunkers we think that he has a chance of a good showing this week.

Henrik Stenson (80/1) has played 10 events this year and recorded 3 top 10 finishes. Stenson ranks 3rd for GIR and 1st for driving accuracy and (like Streelman) if he can stay away from the bunkers we think he has a solid each-way chance this week.

Justin Hicks (450/1) recorded a PGA Tour career best finish of T7 last week with all four rounds under par on the tricky par 70 course. This is another tricky par 70 and we think he has the potential to build on last week’s showing, as anyone who can shoot four rounds under par at TPC Southwind deserves respect. Hicks ranks 18th for GIR and 12th for driving accuracy and we think he represents each-way value at a massive price,
