Jason Dufner and Bernd Wiesberger earn first career wins on PGA and European Tours

By: Golf Shake | Mon 30 Apr 2012

Round up from the weekend's action on the PGA and European Tour events.

Sunday marked a new beginning for two up and coming players, as Jason Dufner and Bernd Wiesberger were able to pull through and win their first career events on the PGA and European Tours, respectively.

Dufner Wins Zurich Classic

For Jason Dufner, it was really a matter of when and not if he would get a win on the PGA Tour in his career, as he had come up short on numerous occasions over the past few years, with the most notable one being a playoff loss to Keegan Bradley in the 2011 PGA Championship.

This time around, though, Dufner came right out the gate at the Zurich Classic with a five under 67 and never looked back after that, shooting three more rounds under par for the event.  On Sunday it got a bit tricky for him, as Ernie Els caught fire and matched his score hole for hole on the back nine.

Dufner was able to get out of jams all day long, with the most memorable one coming on hole 16, a par 4.  Jason hit his tee shot into the water, dropped it next to the hazard, hit it on the green about forty feet away from the cup, and then drained the putt for par to stay tied for the lead.  Both players ended up going into a playoff, where Dufner prevailed by making birdie on the second playoff hole while Els made par.

European Tour Ballantines Championship

As opposed to Dufner, Bernd Wiesberger cruised to a five shot victory on Sunday over Richie Ramsay at the Ballantine’s Championship.

Bernd had come close earlier in the year at the Sicilian Open, but this time was able to win in dominating fashion over a field that included the likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Adam Scott, Paul Casey, and Ian Poulter.

The key for Wiesberger all week was his putter, as he ranked in second for the event in putts per round.  That, combined with hitting nearly 80% of greens in regulation, helped him to prevail for his first career victory on the European Tour.
