English Golfers Get Set For Return of Golf

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 23 Nov 2020

Golfers throughout England will rejoice at the news that the game will resume following this month's national lockdown, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirming that outdoor sports (including golf) will return from December 2.

Unveiling a new regional tiered system that will be in place through to March, English golfers can venture back onto the fairways from next Wednesday, an announcement that was made ahead of a parliamentary debate on the re-opening of golf courses, something that was scheduled to be heard following a viral petition that was signed by over 250,000 people.

Craig Tracey MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf, tweeted the positive news for golf clubs and their members who are keen to enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits that the ancient game can offer.

But just how excited are golfers by the prospect of getting back out and playing? On Golfshake, 1,600 golfers responded to our recent Winter Survey, and we discovered their thoughts on the sport resuming.

85% of those in lockdown presently stated that they will play once golf opens again, while a further 13% will likely play, but their immediate return will be dependent on weather conditions - a sketchy topic at this time of year!

Ultimately, only 2% of golfers stated that they won't be heading back onto the golf course when allowed.

Golfers Set For Return

Many of the respondents left comments regarding the lockdown and their desperation for golf to open again.

"I’m counting the days until I can play again. I love the game and the social interaction. We have such a laugh playing."

"Can't wait to get back on the course. Golf should never have stopped as it's one of the most COVID safe environments possible."

Those two remarks will speak for many, but some will be cautious when picking their return date.

"Will probably wait a week or two because of the anticipated rush from everyone playing again."

"I shall wait for the initial rush and then decide. Playing in poor weather and on a full course is not my idea of fun."

"As soon as possible, assuming the course isn't waterlogged or the weather's really, really bad."

However, inclement weather and tee time access aside, the vast majority of golfers throughout England are thrilled by the resumption of play and will be thrilled at the opportunity they have coming in December.
