Insight from Steve Cowle on his dream of being on the European Tour.

Like any aspiring golfer Steve Cowle has dream of being on the European Tour. However Steve knows more than anyone that hard work and dedication is what you need to get there.

Currently a teaching pro at Blackmoor Golf Club although he says “that may change” in the coming weeks as he tries to get onto the Europro or Challenge Tours to try and get his first professional card.

“A lot of people don’t realise how hard it is, if you haven’t got sponsors. Last year I funded myself and it cost me in the region of £15,000 for the season, so that already puts pressure on yourself to earn that back, just to break even”.
After winning the Trilby Tour championship in 2007, Cowle thought the offers would come in, but unfortunately they failed to appear, even though the win was one of 12 wins he would have that year in pro-am’s and regional events  and eight more wins in 2008.

Steve continues to play in the pro-am’s and continues to win after two more victories in 2009. His goal for 2010 is to win more events but also gain a few invites to the amateur tours.

“It’s certainly why I have continued to work and improve my game. I worked hard with my coach in 2006 and changed my swing a bit and I had my best season in 2007, so I will continue to work hard and hopefully get some rewards.
Steve has his own website in which he offers teaching tip and drills which are available to download, and you can also follow Steve’s season as he tries to get his card.

Steve told me about his pre-round routine, so if you wonder what the pro’s do before they head to the first tee, this is it:

  • Stretch 15/20
  • Head to the range and start with a sand wedge (nice and easy to get loose)
  • Move onto more fuller shots with seven iron, then a four iron and then onto the driver
  • Back down the wedge for some pitching shots, all in all Steve hit around 50 balls
  • Onto the putting green, to get that feel on the green and hopefully hole a few
  • The over to the first tee
