Kedleston Park Becomes Open Regional Qualifying Venue

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 15 May 2018

Derbyshire's highly regarded Kedleston Park has undergone significant upgrades in recent times, and that work has been recognised after the club was confirmed to be a host for Open Championship Regional Qualifying.

Kedleston Park (Rated Highly Recommended on Golfshake) is a beautiful, mature parkland course set in peaceful countryside within the grounds of magnificent Kedleston Hall, a grand 18th century stately home just a few miles northwest of Derby city centre. It has long been regarded as one of the finest courses in Derbyshire and the East Midlands.

Now, with the final phase of an ambitious course improvement and upgrade programme completed, Kedleston Park is delighted to announce that it has been invited to host Regional Qualifying for The Open from 2018 by The R&A, the game’s governing body and organiser of golf’s oldest Championship, which dates back to 1860.

The work at Kedleston Park, overseen by renowned course architect, Tom Mackenzie, has been carefully designed to be ambitious while remaining sensitive to Braid’s original vision. The twin goals have been to improve the visual appeal of the holes, and to enhance the layout’s strategic and tactical demands, ensuring that good shots are still rewarded while miscues may lead to greater challenges. With work now completed, the course will form the ideal test for those seeking to play their way through to The 147TH Open at Carnoustie in July 2018.

While 156 players will ultimately tee it up on the Angus coast, the event itself starts long before that with hopefuls from the smaller professional tours, the club pro ranks and the elite amateur world setting their sights on playing their way through two stages of qualifying to join golf’s superstars in the quest for the game’s ultimate prize – the Claret Jug.

Each year, hundreds of golfers tee it up in 13 or 14 Regional Qualifying events spread across the country, looking to make it through to one of four Final Qualifying events, with three players from each Final Qualifying venue progressing to The Open itself in July. In 2014, Merseyside factory worker John Singleton progressed through Regional and Final Qualifying to achieve a lifetime ambition and play in The Open at Royal Liverpool.

“This announcement caps off one of the finest twelve month’s in our club’s history,” said Club Chairman, Ian Neal. “Our improvement programme is now complete; Bradley Moore, one of our young members, was first reserve for the GB&I Walker Cup team; and now The R&A has decided that we are to join the illustrious rota of clubs that play host to Regional Qualifying for The Open. We are all very excited at the prospect, and look forward to welcoming some of the best amateurs and professionals in the country to our newly upgraded course in June 2018. We are confident that it will provide them with a suitably worthy test on the road to the Claret Jug.”
