Sergio Garcia and Ben Crenshaw Team Up to Win Golf Club Event

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 18 Apr 2018

Most golf clubs have a pair of maestros that are consistently feared in competitions, but not many of them are Masters champions. Such was the case at Austin Golf Club in Texas, when Sergio Garcia and Ben Crenshaw teamed up to win the member-member tournament at the weekend.

The Spaniard, winner of last year’s Masters at Augusta National, enjoys ties to the local area through his wife Angela, while the great American is a two-time winner of the Green Jacket, in 1984 and 1995. Crenshaw is renowned as being a superb golf course architect, and Austin Golf Club was among his creations alongside revered designer Bill Coore.

Garcia was playing from a plus five-handicap in the event, with the 66-year-old Crenshaw – now retired from professional golf after bowing out from the Masters in 2015 – playing off scratch. They combined to success, bringing together that considerable experience and competitiveness to win the club’s contest. Facing this partnership, the other members just didn’t stand a chance.

The two have forged a relationship, with Garcia receiving Augusta-related advice from Crenshaw – who played in 44 Masters – ahead of Sergio’s dramatic victory last year. They also participated in a promotional event for the recent WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at nearby Austin Country Club, and they have now carried that friendship into a winning sphere.

Does your club have a fearsome twosome? Perhaps you’re one of them. However, facing a combined three Green Jackets on the first tee is an entirely more ominous prospect.
