Majestic McIlroy destroys Quail Hollow to win the Wells Fargo

By: Golf Shake | Mon 18 May 2015

Post by Sports Writer, Derek Clements

RORY McILROY's love affair with Quail Hollow continued as he won the Wells Fargo Championship by seven shots on the course where he recorded his first victory on the PGA Tour. Back in 2010, he had a 62 to thank for pipping Phil Mickelson, but this time a fabulous third round of 61 took him from three back to four in front, meaning that he could coast through the final round.

Incredibly, it is McIlroy's seventh victory in 12 months, and he now returns to Britain to defend the  title that started his amazing run of form, the BMW championship at Wentworth. And he does so with a huge lead at the top of the world rankings. It was his 11th win on the PGA Tour, and he has only just turned 26.

McIlroy began the day four in front of Webb Simpson and immediately extended it to five when the American dropped a shot at the first. Simpson would go on to record a round of 72 to share second place with Patrick Rodgers, the latest of a batch of promising young Americans to emerge in 2015. But McIlroy, who cruised round in 69, remains in a class of his own, posting a 21-under-par total.

Spanish Open Wrap Up

James Morrison  became the first Englishman to win the Spanish Open, mastering difficult conditions on the way to a final round of 69 that saw him finishing four shots ahead of David Howell, Francesco Molinari, Edouard Espana and the evergreen Miguel Angel Jimenez - the 51 year old was the leading Spanish finisher thanks to a stunning 67 to end his week.

Morrison, 30, was delighted with his victory - only his second on tour, and his first since the Madeira Islands Open five years ago. He is a better player than that, and hopes that this victory will help him to kick on.

“It feels amazing,” said Morrison. “It’s been five years and I’ve had a lot of chances between then and now to win and haven’t done it but I drew on all my experience and got over the line. The game plan was to stick to my process – I know it’s a cliché but it’s true.

“In years past when I haven’t done it it’s been too much looking at leaderboards and outside influences, and today even down to that last putt I wanted to hole that putt badly and stuck to my process all day long and executed which feels amazing."

Jimenez picked up 288 bottles of beer before he left the course at Barcelona - his prize for a hole in one that was accompanied by a dodgy bit of moonwalk dancing.

Meanwhile on the European Challenge Tour, England’s Max Orrin mastered brutal conditions to secure the second win of his career at the Made in Denmark Challenge. The 21 year old shot a  71 in strong winds  to make up a three-shot deficit and finish with a 285 total.

With four groups to finish behind him, and with Scotland’s Andrew McArthur and Englishman Jack Senior still in with a chance of forcing a playoff, Orrin faced an anxious wait but nobody could catch him. The win takes him to second place in the Race to Omega standings.

Rod Pampling, of Australia, won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Web.com Tour, shooting as final round of 66 for a 72-hole total of 261 to beat Kelly Kraft, of the USA, by two shots. Roland Thatcher, who was a shot further adrift, had a 60 to finish the week.
