Danny Willett Supports Prostate Cancer UK by Wearing Man of Men Badge

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 13 Feb 2020

Former Masters champion Danny Willett is supporting the invaluable charitable work of Prostate Cancer UK this season by wearing the iconic 'Man of Men' pin badge to help raise awareness for the considerable effort to combat a disease that exists in every golf club.

Sheffield ace Willett was prompted to support after learning of super supporter and fellow Yorkshireman’s John Brownless’ tireless work in golf.

Brownless has raised over £50,000 via organising multiple golf days both at home and abroad after being successfully treated for prostate cancer. It was at his most recent day at Shipley Golf Club in September, and John’s inspiring story, that convinced Danny to support. To mark the affiliation, last season’s BMW PGA Championship winner posed with the ‘Man of Men’ ahead of his season opener in Abu Dhabi.

Danny, who will be supporting the charity’s work across the golf season in which he will play tournaments across the globe, said: “Prostate Cancer UK have done a fantastic job in raising awareness of the disease within the golf community – but there’s still a lot more work to be done.

“The disease sadly still exists in every golf club, and one man dies from prostate cancer every 45 minutes. When I first heard that stat in particular, I was shocked – that’s one man every three holes, or six men over the time it takes to complete a round of golf.

“One in eight men in the UK will be affected by the disease - that means that one in eight families will have their lives changed by prostate cancer. It’s important for men to know their risk of the disease and to support the charity in its fight against prostate cancer.”

News of Danny’s support strengthens Prostate Cancer UK’s footprint in golf, with the charity working with the Staysure European Senior Tour at events over the past five years, which has led to high-profile backing from legendary names such as Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam. They have also teamed up with the PGA to reach golfers at risk of prostate cancer and raise money to fund vital research to save men’s lives. The tie up between the charity and the PGA aims to ensure every PGA member and their golf club members are aware of the disease.

Danny added: “Prostate Cancer UK have really blazed a trail with their work in golf in recent years. Whether it’s through hosting golf days or working with established organisations such as the PGA or the European Senior Tour, the charity is doing its utmost to drive this disease out of bounds.

“It’s been great to see high profile players from the world of golf supporting and wearing the ‘Man of Men’ pin badge, and hopefully we can continue this life-saving journey.

“Sometimes we park conversations about health, but it’s so important that men look after themselves and talk to each other about any worries. Prostate Cancer UK’s work in spreading awareness in so many different ways, around golf, has been tremendous and long may that continue.”

Jon Eserin, Director of Fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Danny Willett on board to support our wonderful work across golf. Danny’s a major champion and a household name who will bring added credibility to us as we attempt to tackle this deadly disease, and it’s fantastic that the work of one of our top fundraisers John Brownless has inspired him to get involved.

“We know prostate cancer exists in every golf club. It’s a disease that, sadly, is not yet out of bounds. One in eight men are affected by this disease, and one man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer, a statistic brought home even more when you work out the average time for a round of golf.

“Prostate Cancer UK want to raise awareness and fund ground-breaking research to help fight the disease. That will help us provide dedicated support and information to men and their friends and loved ones. We’re delighted and grateful that Danny will support us and thanks to the support of him, and men like John we can continue to drive home this serious message and raise crucial awareness and funds.”

Many people are unaware that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. One man will die from prostate cancer every 45 minutes in the UK - that’s over 11,500 men a year.

Liverpool fan Willett’s involvement continues to showcase Prostate Cancer UK’s strong presence across sport with its groundbreaking work in football seeing a host of high-profile football managers, including Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Brendan Rodgers and Roy Hogdson all wearing the charity’s badge.

Danny continued: “The ‘Man of Men’ pin badge has played a huge role in helping Prostate Cancer UK to the forefront of the sporting landscape in the UK.

“In football it has had a massive influence; Jeff Stelling and the Soccer Saturday panel, for example, wear theirs with pride week in, week out, and have helped to continue spreading the word about prostate cancer. And it’s great to see so many football managers sporting the badge on touchlines up and down the land.

“It’s excellent that the ‘Man of Men’ pin badge is starting to become more prominent in golf too, and I want to lead by example by sporting it on my golf bag and cap for the upcoming season. I’m hoping that many other professional golfers will join me in wearing a Prostate Cancer UK ‘Man of Men’ pin badge and helping to stop prostate cancer being a killer.”

The charity also has six end-of-season golf championships for successful fundraisers, and for more information on Prostate Cancer UK’s work in golf, visit: prostatecanceruk.org/golf or the dedicated Prostate Cancer UK Section on Golfshake.
