Talk about a weird round today - after the first par 3 hole which i bogied I teed up on the 2nd hole - (par 4 441yards) out came the 3 wood and took a practice swing, dont know what happened but walked off the tee and grabbed the driver.......all the way on every tee driver driver driver.
My 2 worst holes were the par 4 (stroke index 1) where I shot an 8 - bunker messed me up big time and a par 3 (stroke index 18) where I shot an 8. these were the 2 I did play strategically on and managed to mess them up.
In the end I still shot at 87, (I was playing off 17.1 and now my handicap is 16.1?!?!)
All in all concluded that I aint got the patience for this strategic play safe stuff, just seems like a totally different game when I do and I start to make silly mistakes that I usually dont!! arhhhhh On the positive side I started to slow my driver speed down and not the club back so much and play a smooth swing, result was awesome ball stayed on the fairway (driving about 220yards) but like a total prat I started to do this from the 13th instead of earlier.

I went out with the strategy of staying calm whatever happened good or bad & trust all my yardages. Only used the driver on 6 holes. My course is a par 62 & I shot a gross 71 (9 over which WAS 6 shots under my handicap which has now been cut 1.2 shots to 13.7!!!)
I also used my 'matchplay' head when putting & only took 32 putts.
I can't put it all down to strategic play though as I did have a new Taylornmade R7 Draw driver in my bag which is a SUPERB club & I had a lesson last week BUT saying that I tend to think that if your mindset it right everything else will follow.

Played today using the "breathe in on back swing" method and also played each hole as a par 5. Result was:
1) The breathing theory needs work on - it is not that easy.
2) Not one hole did I score under 5..Shot 11 fives in total to a tally of 97 (one more than last week)

No Philip, it certainly didn't. Infact when I was concentrating on breathing in I could feel my shoulder rise slightly which was not good at all..

matt, why don't you use a 3 wood from the tee? much easier to hit straight than the driver, and you still get good distance.if my driver misbehaves(often)i use the 3 wood and still get a fair distance down the fairway, works for me....

Matt,
An old saying "it is not how but how many"..Use what ever suites you, not what suites others - it's your round, it's your game, it's your shot.
Social rounds I can be seen hitting my driver but I have a comp coming up a week saturday. I won't even take the driver let alone use it..
My tee shot will be either a 3 wood, 5 wood or 21* utility (unless a parr 3 dictates otherwise)..
