Golf in the raw at its best

Mach Dunes shows what a genius David McLay Kidd is. Built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest. No fertiliser, only sheep and laid out with the minimum of alteration to the original dunes, only the tees were levelled out.

Pure Links golf

A fantastic natural links golf course. Well worth the pilgrimage to Cambeltown. Great layout with tricky greens.

UNREAL!!!!

One of the best courses I've ever played. It is the proper links gold experience. The course is majestic. Superb layout. Very challenging but very enjoyable to play.

A fantastic course in excellent condition, playing here on the Bunkered voucher makes a worthwhile trip down to this wonderful part of Scotland. The scenery is stunning, the welcome in the clubhouse warm and friendly and for us to round of a two days of golf was the perfect way. Well worth a visit down there.

Having read much about this course ,including a variety of differing opinions ,I teed up really not sure what to expect.arriving at 5pm following a call earlier in the week I paid the twighlight rate and was given a run through of the course by the Gentlemen who was doubling up as bar manager and starter.he could not have been more helpful and offered a great insight into the layout and strategy. As a member at Conwy in north Wales and confirmed links fan I thought I would be well prepared for playing Mach Dunes, not sure however you could prepare for the landscape offered up from 1st tee till last, and what fantastic links land it is.the whole course is a rollercoaster of dramatic holes and hugely undulating greens set against the backdrop of huge dunes and sea views.\\\\Are some of the greens and blind shots unfair as some reviews imply, yes possibly, but the you will not be worried about this, the course is so enjoyable.the smile never stopped from beginning to end.was joined after 9 holes by Mrs and cocker spaniel who enjoyed the walk as much as me,she commented that this was true ,millionaire s golf in setting that has to be as stunning as anywhere in the world. To sum up,amazing and well worth the effort to get here, indeed a golfing pilgrimage that any golf fan will treasure. Score 82 and no balls lost\\\\

Played this course usingour bunkered golf vouchers. Really enjoyed it and the weather stayed reasonable for us. The course has a lot of blind shots and some true butinteresting greens. The course is as natural as you will ever play. The starter was friendly and pointed us in the right direction. Would play again if I got the chance.

Played the Dunes in a party of eight, together with the Old, over four days in late June. The debate as to which of the two we preferred raged long into the night! The final score being 5-3 in favour of the Old, me being one of the 3. \This is one of the most \'linksy\' links one will ever play and its wild look is just incredible. The David McLay Kidd routing is a work of near genius given the planning restrictions of Scottish Natural Heritage that no earth could be moved other than for the building of the greens and tees. Every hole is visually stunning and top driving is rewarded with clear views of the target (other than the few absolute blind shots) and with a line into the green that is receptive to the shot. Stray even a little off line from the right part of the fairway and the second shot can be partly obscured or blind and the green difficult to hold. We played the course twice, in a three club wind at most, it was demanding but eminently playable; in a big wind it might be very unforgiving as there is some serious rough. Forgive the sometimes long walks between the tees, this is a small price to pay for arriving at another great golf hole (the club is too apologetic about this, it really isn\'t a big deal).\The greens are dramatically undulating and so amazing to play that some of the breaks just make you laugh out loud they are so different. The surfaces were, however, varied when we played. Some had been re-turfed earlier in the year with what look like a pure fescue; they putted pretty well and quicker than the others. The old ones had some coarser grasses invading and were slow by links standards but frankly with those borrows quick surfaces could make the greens unplayable. \Holes to love are the pretty short four 1st, driveable 4th with its green in a hollow, the 11th along the shore with a two-tiered fairway, the par 3 12th with its undulating green and the dog-leg 17th (was the 8th they switched the nines), over a chasm to a raised green (the green has been moved forward 40 yds but, still, how hard is this four?). \The clubhouse is compact and simple (helpful staff) but absolutely all the better for it. It\'s not seen from the course which just enhances the sense of having got away from it all. I really hope the unrealised plans for a big clubhouse remain just that, unrealised. Just extend the existing a bit, that\'s all that\'s needed. \A piece of pure heaven!

Have played the 3 courses in the area but Mach Dunes is by far in my opinion the best. Have played the course over the last 3 years and it is improving with every visit. Every visit we have been made to feel welcome and as yet have been really lucky with the weather.

Wow what a golf course, after 2 holes my friends and I agreed we would be back next year, it's not overly tough or overly long it's fun to play with a great variety of holes. We made the long drive from Lanarkshire for the day and weren't disappointed, the welcome and the general friendliness of the guys in the clubhouse was fantastic and the course was in superb condition. You don't need guides or caddies (that's what marker poles are for) although some of the greens have the biggest slopes I have seen on a course, but it just makes it more fun. All in all I can't wait to go back, fantastic.
