The Cherington is an inland links that hosted Open qualifying for six straight years, the maximum permitted. It starts off fairly benign and gets tougher and tougher the further you get in. With tightening fairways (the 18th is currently just 5 yards wide at one point!) and rough that touches your knees if you stray too wide, it is a tough test at any time but when the weather gets unpleasant it gets really tough.
The Avening is more of a parkland course and whilst it is a little more forgiving it is the slightly tougher of the two courses with water featuring on several holes. It plays quite long but it rewards thinking golf rather than power golf.
With a driving range, short game practice area with two bunkers, large putting green, excellent changing facilities (with towels provided free) and a club house that is large and comfortable, the facilities are excellent. The bar is reasonably priced and the food is considered to be some of the best in the area.
Green fees are quite pricey unless playing with a member, but for a few pounds more you can get a day ticket that allows you to play both courses and that is excellent value
In short, excellent. So good, I joined!

Quality and variety
I played on the Cherington course at Minchinhampton Golf Course as a new member of their Academy programme and was very impressed with the quality of the fairways and greens. The layout of bunkers was challenging and the variety of fairway shapes and elevations kept it interesting. The fact that there are two courses to choose from (Cherington and Avening) only adds to the variety.Reviewer Rating

Great Course
Had a fantastic day out there with the BAGS society. Course was in great shape. Greens were tricky, but very smooth and true, just how they should be. Would definitely play there again. Thoroughly recommend.(Round played: May 2018 - Score: 89 Handicap: 23)

When I played in June the rough was quite punishing but thanfully more so for my playing partner than me but this also did impact the round time slightly.
Both courses are wonderful and I'd highly recommend to anyone looking to play golf in Gloucs. Nice friendly welcome from the staff and facilities excellent.

Welcoming. Outstanding condition. Requires thought, despite relative forgiveness for wayward shots - definite scoring opportunities but being out of position makes very tough to score well. Greens and bunkers excellent.

Both courses offer a fair test for golfers of any handicap. Each hole was well signed, with directions to the next tee where required. Despite being in the Cotswolds the course was was a fairly easy walk, no large hills to climb.
I'll be back

Despite the horrible winter thus far, the greens on the Cherington were very good. I imagine that given some decent weather that they be exceptional. The Avening greens weren't quite as good, but they had recently been worked on.

Lovely well maintained course
Well maintained course on rolling downs; good variety of holes, more water on back nine; rough is good challenge in places and course rewards accuracy. not cheap, but fair value. Great bar and food.Reviewer Rating

Nice course
Nice course and some really good holes. Decent challenge for all levels. Only minor negatives were very slow greens and no signage on greens to the next tees so you could get lost easily as the course intermingles with other holes in places.Reviewer Rating
