Clubhouse closed at 18.15 !
Teed off at 14.22 and after a dour reception in the pro shop we were luckily issued with a voucher for a free cup of tea post round, However after battling our way around in wind and rain found The Clubhouse was now closed so couldn't either dry off or use our vouchers ! - DisappointedReviewer Rating

Can imagine this course to be great when played in the summer with a little less wind. I don't think it quite deserves the £37.50 green fee, I've played far better at this price. Overall a lovely course with fantastic views, will definitely be back next summer.

Set high up overlooking Brighton and with brilliant vistas, it is innevitably going to be a bit "breezy", but thankfully on our second vist in June 2012, the weather was kind, and was just a "slight breeze" - no doubt the locals would call it still!
My report is obviouslly tinged with a plus as I managed 36 points, miles ahead of the nearest itinerant's. The course certainly needs to be played with a certain amount of brain cells, something which I normally tend to leave in Dorset but luckilly was achievable on this visit. As mentioned before, an unusual start with 3 par 5's in the first 4 holes, but in truth, in fair conditions, these should show you at least a couple of pars. The course is a fine chalk downland test with one or two blind shots, lovely true greens and a very fair bounce. A Traditional members club that like many others is having to pull itself into the 21st century, but is doing so well although no chips after the round was a little off!
Still, overall, fine test, lovely true greens, warm clubhouse & Shop and as long as you can get a good green fee deal , avenue well worth of a visit

Unusual start with 3 par 5s in the first 4 holes. Having said that the first 2 are basically the same hole just stretching further from the club house.
The 5th is a delightful par 3 that you only see once you have left the 4th green, and as always the wind direction can make 4 clubs difference !
The 7th, 9th and 10th are average par 4s with neither length nor bunkering featuring too heavily, having said that, the newish bunkers down the left side of 9 do make for a more difficult drive.
The 11th is basically the same hole as the 1st or the 2nd.
Then come 2 good par 4s which require a different shape of shot than most of us are comfortable playing (the draw).
The 16th really deserves its sroke index 1 as it is a par 4 which is often unreachable with driver then 3 wood if the wind is in your face !
the 17th is another great par 3 but the 18th is unfortunately one of the weaker holes on the course.
In truth there are not that many special holes but there are only a couple of week ones.
As is so often the case unfortunately, the members here seem to believe themselves to be above mere mortals because they belong to a private club.
I know several members who are nothing like this, but i am yet to play a green fee round without a dirisery comment from one member or another.
I understand all to well that we are guests on their course but it appears they have a members list made up of wannabe captains !
I let my scoring do the talking unlike many i have experienced at The Dyke !
Overall the course is a really good one which can change dramatically with the wind from one day to the next.
I just hope that young golfers (without rich parents) are not put off by the attitude of so many that believe this to be the best club around Brighton.

Great New Bunkers
Devil's Dyke has had some bunker work done and they are looking great. Lightning fast greens, fairways ok for a downs course.Reviewer Rating
