A really decent course. Quite long, quite narrow, but in good nick. Greens slower than they look. But a beautiful setting, and the background of planes taking off from nearby Luton airport is quite cool. 19 handicap, but played really well to shoot 41 points. We're definitely coming back.

Great Day!

Played the course 2 weeks ago for the first time and had such a great day. I am part of a surrey membership that recently included Luton Hoo to their options and I really cant wait to return. The staff was fantastic and made us feel very welcome, I spoke at length with Craig the Pro after my round and he took the time to tell us about the reasoning behind why there are no bunkers and was so friendly. The course was in great condition and loved the layout. The prices in the bar i must say were extorniate but none the less didnt affect our day.
Look forward to returning soon!

I last played Luton Hoo in early 2013, when the new holes were very open, and there was little to define fairways/rough. There were a lot of newly planted trees then, but mainly all you could see were the pale green tubes that were protecting the new trees from being eaten by the wildlife. Moving on almost 7 years, and the trees now have some height to them, which defines some of the holes, although they will need a lot more growth to really make the front nine holes on the course anything other than very 'open'. The fact that there are no bunkers on the course, also means there is little to 'protect' the greens, no matter which direction you are approaching from. We played after some particularly wet weather, and there were a couple of temporary greens, which were nothing more than holes cut in the fairways just short of the greens themselves. The back nine holes are amongst very mature trees, so at this time of year, there were a lot of leaves on the ground, which did make for some lost balls for our society, which includes some players who are not that straight off the tee.

As we were a society, we did get a very good deal for our 18 holes, plus bacon roll & coffee/tea, on a weekend, but generally, the club is expensive to play without some form of deal. One of our number decided to order a breakfast, which cost over ?16, (including a built in service charge, which he objected to, because he had to wait so long for the food).

The course was far busier than when I last played, but everyone seemed to be moving along quite well despite time looking for wayward balls, so the pace of play was acceptable. It was surprisingly quiet for a course so close to Luton Airport and the M1, and apart from the newer holes, we could have been anywhere in deep countryside. There is a small pro-shop, but I thought the items on sale were again on the expensive side (e.g. a metal bag-tag and ball marker in a presentation box was ?25).

A few minor downsides. There were very few waste bins around, which meant people were leaving all sorts of rubbish at the tees, presumably to be picked up by greenkeeping staff later. This included an empty single malt bottle, and several plastic bottles. There were no tee signs, so if you didn't know where you were going, you couldn't check before playing. Since my last visit, there are now signs to the car park, but it is still easy to miss these, so if you're visiting to play golf - on the road into the facility, turn right before you reach the main house, go past the next building (this includes the 19th hole bar, pro shop etc), and the car park is on the left. Go as far as possible into the car park (down by the tennis courts) for the shortest walk to the pro shop and 19th bar.

The course has hosted a number of championship events, so they do have some long holes, which only our biggest hitters were getting near to hitting in 2, and that was with us playing from the yellow tees, some on which were very generously far forward of the usual tee placements. Apparently it's over 7,000 yards off the very back, but I don't think they generally allow play from those tees.

I would like to play the course during the summer (or at least late spring/early autumn), but I guess the deals would be fewer and further between at that time of year. Either way, I'm sure I will be back, so long as I don't have to pay the standard green fee.

Fantastically challenging course, and although we dodged the rain and had a beatiful last few holes in the sun, the wind made every hole one to have a good think about on each shot. Some holes seem easy but the rough and water hazards have been put in places you have to tactfully pitch short or go for glory.
This was my first at Luton Hoo and I will certainly go again over the summer with friends.
Cheers,

I recently played Luton Hoo and i have to say some of the below reviews are completely innacurate. Around the same time i played Hanbury Manor, Brocket Hall and the Shire and the course condition at Luton Hoo was far superior, the greens in particular were superb. Although i appreciate the course is still maturing the contrasting nines make it far from boring and actually found the lack of bunkers and an intruiging charachteristic.
All in all its definitely a course more suited for the lower handicap but the quality of the greens will soon please all standards and the fact its open to the public is a bonus!!
Looking forward to going back in the summer when the roughs up a bit

Not Value for money - especially the greens.

Nice layout of the course, mature trees, a challenge in places. However, the greens were somewhat patchy and really slow, bumpy in places. Not VFM! Member at Redbourn and the course there is better maintained and cared for. As for the restaurant and bar. Billed as a 5-star venue with 1-star service. Breakfast was woeful, £15 and £4 for tiny coffee. No hash browns, no substitute provided, had to ask. No butter for toast. Eventually arrived after breakfast finished. Great look and location. Therefore I think the management don’t think they have to try too hard. Handicap 17 - Score +20.

Tell you played local council course week later, miles better and another course Redbourn GC both allot cheaper and better condition. Wont be going back in a rush need bring bank balance if buy any food or drink, even that was poor.

Expensive for what it is...

To be fair the date of this review is early February so I didn't expect the course to be in pristine condition. It was relatively dry but the mud seemed to stick to your shoes and ended up everywhere (I carried but those who took trolleys had to jet wash them at the end). The cost of the round was ?50 for a Sunday morning so quite expensive compared to others in Milton Keynes. Bacon rolls were ?6 and coffees ?4 so again not cheap. The course was in OK condition, greens a little lumpy (fair enough for this time of year) but having never played it before the signage to the next tees was awful (as was the signage to get to the venue). There are trees in the middle of the fairway on 2 or 3 holes - some dead where they seem to be getting rid of them? When we played it was blowing a gale and the course is pretty open which made it more challenging than normal. Overall I don't think it lived up to my expectations of a perceived 'quality' course although they seem to charge for the privilege. I couldn't really recommend based on that alone.

Good greens

This was the day after some heavy rain. The tees were in a poor state with a couple of tees in a bad way. The fairways had been cut very short, and there were a few weeds on them. The greens were very good, they were all consistent with a nice speed, and would also accept a well hit approach shot. The rough was a bit trampled down but otherwise fine. The paths were uneven and untidy.
The front nine is up and down, and rather featureless, the back nine is a much better nine both visually and in terms of interesting holes.

Luton Hoo Hotel is a magnificent, grande country mansion set in beautiful gardens. A real gem. The golf course however is disappointing in the extreme and does not reflect the grandeur of the house.
Luton Hoo Golf Course course gives the impression of being hastily put together across flat unused farm land. Unlike the mansion, there are no memorable features. No bunkers. Some water but nothing exciting. An experience akin to a trudge across neglected grazing pasture. Trying to spot the course signage was a hilarious distraction from the tedium! Probably the worst course played this year. Oh dear Luton Hoo, are you leaning too heavily on your 5* Mansion & Spa reputation ? Complacency is dangerous. I have played a lot of 'lesser' renowned courses this year that are far far better and deliver amazing value for money by comparison.

A beautiful, well maintained parkland course. Enjoyable even for the higher handicap player primarily due to no bunkers, although water comes into play on six holes up to the 12th. Longish being 6544 off yellow tees and 5 par 5's, but don't let that put you off.

Overall a very nice course. Fairways nicely kept and the greens were true but perhaps a little slower than you would expect on a championship course. Front nine is fairly open whereas the back nine is a lot tighter due to a lot of well established trees. On a brighter note there are no bunkers to capture those wayward shots to the green. On the down side the constant stream of low flying aircraft heading in to Luton airport could prove to be a distraction. Pro shop and club house facilities were good. However, food and drink were quite over priced.
