Golfs garden of Eden

A true test of golf, beautiful layout to forget the real world and walk in the footsteps of the greats of this wonderful game.
My favourite course by a country mile the blind shots punishing bunkers and sloping greens it's heaven.
Wonderful wonderful venue
Shame on anyone who can find fault at St Georges

Hugely Enjoyable

Only managed to get 9 holes played the previous week due to horrendous weather. Good to experience a true links course at its worst (weather). The club were kind enough to allow us to re-book and the conditions couldn't have been more different. Bright sunshine/no wind and a true pleasure to play the course. On both occasions found the staff to be most welcoming and friendly. Superb.

I am not sure why Royal St Georges permits green fee players .It has many socities playing and a solid membership. .St Georges is an experience of understated quality from the very moment you enter the lane to the club , to playing on the huge layout and to lunching afterwards. There are those who are not accustomed to changing for lunch , nor to restrained welcomes and write critical reports .Every time I play there , I have had a wonderfully relaxing day . The greens and fairways need maintenance and rotten luck if you play at these times , but really , you can still enjoy the challenge .

A course that can be difficult to navigate for the first time. I was quite nervous as the course has a a daunting reputation, but it was really good to test myself on a more challenging course. Stay straight off the tee or lose a lot of golf balls!

As Seve said on his first visit ¿dónde está el campo de golf. Where is the golf course.
The biggest most cragged dunes of any Course on the Open rota, leading to many blind tee shots, and if it's a little wet underfoot you will get severe sloppy lies even from good tee shots. Many of the pros dislike it as they see it as unfair and unrewarding of their perfect strikes. But for everyone else who is less good than scratch, I argue that the large verging on enormous greens and bunkers mostly set a few yards back from the putting surface make St Georges the most fun to play of any British Links. The pros would take Birkdale all day long, but most amateurs will tire of the bunkers left and right off every tee shot and small greens always running off into the pots. By contrast, St Georges is far more forgiving, and in many places very flattering. Yes the clubhouse rules are stuck in the past, Lytham and Liverpool for example are virtually fully open to the visitor who can spend ages soaking up the history on display, St Georges is a little more.... Self important. But you know, that's ok. The George even seems to have a machine to keep the rough penal but sufficiently thinned out to make losing balls a rarity the times I've played it. If I had to play just one course the rest of my life - maybe this one. Magnificent.

A faded 30’s seaside bungalow of a clubhouse, with predictably prissy dress code.. A miniscule car park. A 300 squelchy yard romp to a practise range, an imaginative flat saucer putting green. A featureless coastline to border the grey moonscape that can only be St Georges. Even the list of recent winners of the claret jug read not so much a who’s who, as a who’s not of world golf, with just two other majors to the names of the last 5 winners. Perhaps the large run offs and wide fairways mean luck plays a bigger factor than it strictly should. Don’t expect distance markers on flags, much less marker posts to assist the numerous blind shots
And yet none of this matters at all. This is not the course for the bar room bore who can only talk about his backswing, or the yellow neophyte with little historical interest in the game. This is the course which must have had as many memorable Open moments over it’s 14 incarnations, as any other. This is the course for those that know of Bradshaws’ bottle and Duncans’ hollow. Langers OB or the Sands of Bjorn. Couples’ footle into the burn, Normans or Cottons imperious rampages to the title of Champion golfer. We don’t complain of the nouveaux baroque columns at Buckingham Palace, or the pompadoured rococo stylistic exercise that is Tower Bridge. If you complain about Royal St Georges shortcomings, you are simply seeing the game as would a soulless, detached automaton.

Classic links course that takes some working out. Almost every hole plays in a different direction so it can be somewhat beguiling. The fairways don't always reward a good drive either but the greens were in good nick for the time of year and rough not as penal as in high summer. Great value if you can find good weather before 1st April.
