Great course stuck in the dark ages

I visited here as a 2 ball with a genuine interest in looking for a club to join for 2020. This course is perfectly situated between myself and a friend who play weekly and I was bought this game as a Father?s Day gift.

I?d followed the Groupon instruction whereby I could only go out after 2pm at weekends in June and July (even though the weekend round is already more expensive that weekdays). However the morning of our visit, the weather forecast was for high winds and heavy rain from 4pm. I checked the website booking system and saw only 3 tee times booked between 12pm and 2pm so called the pro-shop to see that if we could get there early could we go out any earlier. The response back was very cut and dry that as a Groupon customer it was 2pm at the earliest. I asked then if I could pay extra and go out earlier, where I was advised the only option was that we would have to pay the full weekend green fee ?35pp and as we would be cancelling the Groupon without the required notice we?d lose the voucher as well and that this couldn't then be used at another time.

On arrival at the course the experience continued along this disappointing trail where after a fair walk from the car park to the pro shop to book in I was told I couldn't sign both of us in even though I had the printed voucher, so I had to wait for my playing partner to arrive, to then walk back again. Expecting to sign some kind of disclaimer or insurance waiver, all we had to do was write our name and email address in a book (no signature or special instructions etc) which made the initial me trying to book us both in seem even more tedious. We sat outside waiting for our tee time as were warned about not using our mobile phones on the patio area or anywhere in the grounds (this made tracking my scores/stats on golfshake impossible), then when finishing our round there were no staff anywhere to be found to buy a drink from, we waited in the bar for 5 minutes, then checked every room in all accessible buildings before leaving. We ended up going for our after round drink in a nearby village. The service there was excellent..... perhaps the club can get some tips?

It's so disappointing as the course is excellent, a great challenge with some very special holes, especially on the back 9.

All in all, I appreciate that rules are rules but when I read so much about dwindling memberships and golf clubs closing, this was a missed opportunity for this club to pick up 2 new members. Needless to say our search will continue for a new club for 2020.

The course designer is obsessed with bunkers, they are everywhere. Dreadful course to play, tight fairways and one hole with two damn great trees across the fairway. Only suitable to single figure h/cap golfers, all else avoid like the plague.

Course playing very long as still quite damp fairways after Saturday rain so challenging. Better when more run as par 4's are challenging.

Peaceful but bland parkland

The greatest strength of this course is its beautiful setting, with no roads or houses within eyeline or earshot it's very tranquil. The land is remarkably flat for where it is, which makes for an easy walk but leads to the primary shortcomings of the course. Firstly that the layout is quite bland with a formulaic procession of par fours and no holes you'd consider memorable. Secondly that the drainage is terrible and in winter it becomes an unplayable quagmire.

Conditioning is however generally very good, a summer round will find well kept playing areas and true rolling although flat and uninteresting greens. If only similar attention were paid to the areas adjacent to the fairways - for if you stray from them you're liable to lose your ball in the thicket of brambles and nettles which often borders both sides of the hole.

Club pros are not known for their friendliness and people skills, but this one takes taciturn to a new level....

Course was very wet after a week of rain but helped that it was sunny but fresh today. Otherwise a lovely day and course not in bad nick but does have drainage issues if it rains a lot so beware.

Played Whipsinade now a couple of times & it seems to get harder each time. Narrow fairways no room for error. Way to many bunkers and the sand is like cement. Very difficult and frustrating place to play golf. High handicappers beware

Good course

Unfortunately the course didn’t suit my slice, lots of trees. Definitely coming back for another go. Friendly service.

NIce condition but a bit dull

The course is in excellent conditions, but its all a bit dull. All the par fours are between 350 and 400 and its all a bit faceless.

Nice enough place but you wouldnt write home about it.

Tree lined course with punitive rough

Course in great condition, the greens were true but a little slow. Interesting that most holes had a 100 yards carry before fairway that was punished if a low drive that just stopped as soon as it touched the ground before the fairway. Friendly members.

Didn’t do it justice

A lot of the holes to some, will seem very much the same, par 4’s and 5’s with slight doglegs. However, this course has a lovely feeling of being in the countryside, and I’ve never seen so much wildlife wandering around, especially with the zoo next door! Not the friendliest welcome on arrival, but a lovely little clubhouse, good practice facilities, and a well looked after course, greens and fairways were perfect. Played dreadfully, so I will look forward to coming back and trying again!

Better Than I Remembered

Played here July , 2020 .

Pleasant , secluded hence there aren't really any views , quite heavily tree lined parkland course .Although it's quite long on the card with the shortest par 4 being 365 yards off the whites it is fairly level walking .
I played here once before a couple of years ago but this time i thought it was a better & more enjoyable course than i initially gave it credit for & i will try and return here soon .I think the first time the leaves had come off the trees but this time each hole felt more secluded with it's own identity .
Quite a lot of doglegs & the condition of everything felt good quality.
The only slightly strange thing was that most of the green complexes were nice and large but about half a dozen were smaller & a different shape ( for example , the 12th was long and narrow on an upslope ) & these greens seemed a bit out of context to the general scheme of the larger ones .
Also ,the course could maybe do with two short par 4's.

But overall worth playing & i would look forward to playing here again .
