A gorgeous setting
I’ve been here many times and am always surprised this amazing course doesn’t make it into more top ten lists. A big, rolling test with huge fairways winding through mature woodland, with views of the Black Mountains in the distance, its appearance is made even more stunning by the backdrop on many holes of The Hendre, the huge gothic pile which was once the home of Charles Stuart Rolls, one of the founders of Rolls Royce. The holes meanwhile are championship standard; wide fairways which will suit big hitters, natural and man-made hazards throughout to keep you focussed and impeccable greens - most of them large and rolling. My personal Amen Corner is the fifth, sixth and seventh - a tough par 5 4 5 sequence around and over some of the biggest hills on the course, ending in some testing water challenges. The course has four watery par threes which are all justly celebrated, none more so than the 18th, which has water front and right of the green and a bunker you could hide a campervan in. I’ve played there many times but remember especially a society day a few years ago. I was paired with a guy who was in the hunt for the trophy. He was quiet and grimly focussed and had hardly said a word all day. As we stood on the tenth tee, the sun starting to dip to the west and the shadows lengthening, I turned round and gazed at the marvellous site of the Hendre, the ninth and 18th greens nestling in its shadow. “Nice here isn’t it?” I asked, of no one in particular. Mr Trophy spoke for the first time that day. “It’s paradise.”Reviewer Rating

A great society day at The Rolls
Playing two rounds in one day even with buggies is a challenge but with a superb course, great company, views, weather and food it is a pleasure. The course was running fast but the greens were slower than expected. Previous players should ahve repaired more divots.Reviewer Rating

Lovely Course, very welcoming
Really enjoyed playing this great course. Pace of play was excellent. Off the beaten track and therefore not as busy as your typical 'resort type courses', Staff all very welcoming and manage the covid guidance well(Round played: Sep 2020 - Score: 88 Handicap: 17.6)

Painfully Slow
Visited as part of a 3 day golf weekend in South Wales. This was probably the most expensive and least enjoyable course we played. Musty changing rooms with no hot water. Limited practice facilities. Fairways and greens well presented, but with some frankly ridiculous pin positions making lag putting impossible. Bunkers were poor, it didn\'t look like they had seen a rake in a month. Tee boxes needed mowing. The halfway house was \"closed for 10 mins\" for at least 30mins and had no sausage rolls or beer. All of this could possibly be forgiven had it not been for the incredibly slow pace of play, 4hrs 58mins for the round and no marshals. The Pro seemed unable or unwilling to speed things along (perhaps they are just over booking). There are numerous better options in the area, won't be rushing back.Reviewer Rating

A bucket list golf course
What an amazing golf course. Challenging with some of the quickest greens I've ever played on. There are multiple signature holes on this course with views that are unbelievable. All staff both in the clubhouse and the pro shop were polite and informative. Can't wait to play again.Reviewer Rating

Return to an old favourite
Having played the course every year through the 90s and early part of the 20s it had been around 15yrs since my last visit. I was a little disappointed that nothing much had changed, particularly on the non playing side. Everything was pretty much the same, but older. There was a smell in the changing rooms which had existed all those years ago and there was still no hot water in the showers. The course itself was in decent nick. There wasnt a great deal of run on the fairways, which i expected, but was content to put this down to the time of year and the need to keep ample grass on them so they did not get burnt. Greens were in excellent condition and, as always very challenging. As a 2 ball, we caught up with the four ball in front around hole 5, and they proceeded to use 2 tripods on most holes to film each other playing. Our round took a labourious 4 and a half hours.
