2 different courses!

Such a frustrating round.

Found via Tee Off Times and wish I’d avoided. The course starts on a very tight, very very short front 9. The front 9 was in poor condition. Fairways patchy with giant (and dangerous with trolley) burrows in the middle. Greens not receptive and too firm to hold, with a bad bobbly roll so we have up putting and picked up.

Ready to walk off the course but glad pursued with back 9. Not a bad hole from the 10th onwards. The back 9 longer and softer with much better greens… resumed putting. Stand out was par 5 14th.

Would go back but only to play back 9 twice!

Not great and poor condition

Played this course recently and must say that the course was in poor condition, the tee boxes and fairways were cut to a length that was more a custom to being the first cut of rough.

The greens were the worst I've played on this year and ever, very slow, bumpy and showing signs of disease, with a distinct lake of root growth.

There are many areas around the course that should be GIR, but no signs of work being undertaken.

On the plus side the membership were very welcoming and friendly.

Sorry, but I won't be playing this course again.

Unreasonable greens

The course is extremely punitive if you miss the right line. Even when you land on the fairways, there are loads of divots or just holes which make it a bit irritating. The greens are pretty fast and a major challenge. The ground staff seem to relish putting the holes in illegal positions, making it even more frustrating. The course drives me mad, but I am determined to shoot a good round there. Playing off 13, I usually shoot high 80s.

Covid relaxation round

Two ball during the lockdown relaxation period. A fairly blustery day with winds up around 20mph but with most holes tree lined it didn't impact the round too much. Fairways were in decent condition, as were the greens although they were a touch long in places meaning they weren't too quick and were a little inconsistent. Understandable though if like many places some staff have been furloughed. Disappointing to see some players sharing buggies and not adhering to social distancing (could have been from the same households but 40+ year old blokes mean it's unlikely) and this seemingly went unchallenged by staff as it was witnessed on the 10th next to the club house. Course as always is tight in places and undulations put an even greater emphasis on picking the right line. Enjoyable visit, will be heading back at some point.

Good value and layout

I've played the Staffordshire on a few occasions and always enjoy the variety it has to offer. Mature trees, slopes, elevations and well sanded bunkers the only thing really missing are some water hazards.

Happened to visit during the random ladybird epidemic that featured in the news and it certainly made for a testing round. Whilst addressing the ball 15-20 would land on you before each shot such were the numbers of them, a little distracting when they choose your hands and face as a landing zone!

Enjoyable day though and the course was in fairly good condition. Only criticism being that the greens seemed very firm, high tee shot into the par 3 9th found the dance floor only to bounce 15 feet high and through the back onto the cart path!

Glad to have got a late 2018 visit in before the wet weather as the course can struggle in places in my experience, particularly the 14th (I think) as the entire hole slopes steeply right to left so in winter the left side tends to be completely closed due to the water run off and it's a nightmare of a hole to navigate even when it's fully open!

Tree lined and testing.

Overall a true test of accurate golf. A course you have to think your way round. If you can it long and bit wayward keep your driver in your bag. Frozen greens so 18 temp greens which can be frustrating but understandable too. Look forward to playing again in favorable conditions. SHAME about the club members who followed us. I noticed they caught us up on hole 5 and just about to suggest to friends we should let them through but they started firing balls at us before we had reached the bell. Being members they would have known there was a bell. They were half way to their balls before I made of point of ringing the bell loudly. Determined not to let through after that and they got close a few times because they were good players. Pity their arrogance got in the way. Caught up two other members who seemed very nice and were disturbed when we told them about the members behind. But we will be back :-)

Tough test for the high handicapper but a nice course

Nice course with a good variety of holes and good facilities (range, practice green, clubhouse/bar and changing facilities). Drainage on some holes always lets it down a little (previously had a round cancelled due to a downpour before arrival as we were informed some greens suffer with surface water). Good test of golf though and tends to be good value for money on a weekday.

Quirky layout - don't miss!!

Front nine: you hardly need a driver. short and tight layout. Precision and placement is the key to getting round. off-camber slopes with rock hard fairways no real bail out areas

Back nine: open's up slightly but again plenty of mature trees and brambles / gorse to catch you out. shot shaping a must on some holes and plenty of running the ball in.

Greens in good condition and putted well but not quick.

Driving range and short game area to left of the first tee,

clubhouse is nice along with changing rooms, friendly staff also.

Plenty of parking available, only downside for me the wrong side of Dudley, traffic hotspots even on a Sunday!!!!
