I have played this course many times over the years. I feel the course since the late Mr Reay passed away has gone down hill. Several bunkers have been taken out and the fairways seen to go tfrom fairway to deep rough with no second cut.. The rough is that deep if you miss the fairway you struggle to find your ball.
With regards the greens . It seem that there are no areas onvthe greens that are level to put the pin.

Poor Maintenance

Only the second time I have played here but not sure if I will again. Course really poor condition. Greens not cut short. Fairways not cut at all so really difficult round.

Starting with the positives, the one man receptionist, pro-shop assistant and starter was very friendly and welcoming. Also, the course was reasonably well maintained.

The layout of holes leaves much to be desired. The large expanse of open parkland looks bland and unwelcoming from the clubhouse, not a thing of beauty. There is no first cut here, hit the fairway or risk losing your ball in 3 inches of rough which dominates the no man's land between holes. There are 3 back to back unchallenging par 5 holes from holes 3-5, then another at hole 7, relentless. The monotony only broken by the awful 6th hole, a long downhill par 3 with a very narrow target.

The back 9 is marginally more pleasant but a Mickey Mouse par 3 from an elevated tee needs a courtesy buggy to take you down to the green then back up for the next hole. I played in a fourball (not slow) but we caused a backlog due to the nature of the hole.

Undoubtedly a nice bit of land for a golf course but the lack of thought given to the layout is astonishing.

If you are a discerning golfer visiting the area regardless of handicap, look elsewhere.

Scorched fairways

Quite a difficult one this. The weather we have had certainly hasn't helped. The fairways and tees are brown and bare. I don't think there?s much the club can do about that to be honest. The greens were abit scorched in places too but they?d tried to keep the pins on the greenest parts of the greens. One thing that was annoying was going into bunkers and being in somebody?s footprint. Rakes are provided so it's just laziness from people not using them. The layout of the course is good. They just need a couple of weeks of rain to get the course looking like it should.

Nice course, let down by some staff

Booked 2 afternoon tee times, however was not informed they wanted to lock course up at 7.30pm! Greens were peppered with pitch marks and there had been a members comp all day. IIve played here before and experienced a few of golf staff being over the top in regards to time and rules. They expect you to sprint around and forget to mention they're locking up lol ! One member of staff was rude to our group about the course closing and ushered us to car park muttering He wanted to go home for a beer! Definitely need to improve their customer service, think twice before booking a twilight tee time!

Good course, shame about the club captain!

Challenging start, narrow course with anything off the fairway difficult to find. Enjoyable but busy. Day spoilt by Club Captain ?asking us nicely? to speed things up when we were just waiting on people ahead of us. Got the impression that he was more annoyed at the 3 Societies that had visited that morning and he took it out on us! Will not be playing there again.

A beautiful spring day but not really the course to match. Played here several times and the layout is fine for our standard (16-20) but it was in the poorest condition I've seen. The greens and surrounding areas were woeful! Pits, holes and uneven surfaces on all greens made putting laughable. Also, itwas a nice Saturday so we expected it to be busy but it took 2hrs 40 to play the front 9 and waited every single shot. Too many groups who just needed spacing. We decided to play the front again rather than queuing round the back 9 and did it in an hour and 20!!

Worth a visit

We visited Stoneleigh in July when the grass was brown in the middle of the heat wave. The greens were all good though some tee boxes could have done with some TLC! An open course with little rough but some tricky slopes on fairways and greens. Good variation of types of holes, some over water. Nice greeting from pro, from members and good food in clubhouse. As the title says - well worth a visit.

Course is probably best played in the summer months, a number of holes at present are played off winter mats which is not ideal. Greens I would imagine have been very good in the summer, but at present they have suffered from what looks like Fusarium disease, making them patchy. There are however some very good deals including a round of golf and breakfast during the winter months.
