Sensational

From the moment you drive up and unload your golf gear to the bag drop it is a first class experience. The club house/Mansion is just amazing, walking up the steps and into the Mansion for coffee before hand - it is sumptuous.

Practice area is really good with free range balls.

We played the Lane Jackson and Colt combination. Some sensational holes. On Lane the first 3 are breathtaking view along side the lake and the bridge. Then there are some fairly ordinary holes in the middle before a rousing finish up the 9th back to the club house.

On the Colt after a shorturned par 5>4 opener where the bunkers are a bit out of place the 2nd hole has a lovely green with great views (just look at the house on the right!). The par 3 3rd is beautifully framed by bunkers. I've not seen a par 3 like it. Obviously the par 3 seventh is stunning (but not much like Augusta as they say!) it is lovely on its own - as is the stunning tee shot on 8th which is just class.

We played on a voucher FOC but this time of year £85 is well worth it.Not sure you can justify the £175 standard fee though in the summer weekdays. But a really great day. I'm still buzzing now!

Beautiful (but pricey) Stoke Park

A wonderful course, beautiful setting but for what you pay, you would expect a little more fine-tuning.

The 1st hole has recently been downgraded to a par 4, somewhat disappointingly and therefore some of the bunkering is a little out of kilter. The pretty and tough par 3 3rd requires solid ball-striking, as does the 4th, a long dogleg par 4 which requires a fade off the tee to set up a medium iron to the green. The signature par 3 7th is famously the model on which the 16th at Augusta was created, and requires some delicate putting to avoid a three-whack. The back 9 starts with a gentle par 4, followed by another beauty of a par 3, framed by trees from the tee and featuring water and a false front. the dogleg-left 14th returns you towards the clubhouse, followed by the only non-descript par 3 on the course at 15, which would be better off for some decoration between tee and green. 16 and 17 are both strong par 4s which require accurate approaches, before the uphill 18th allows for a birdie chance to finish in glory in front of the adorning drinkers on the balconies.

The greens were quick and true on the most part, but given the hot and dry summer, it can be expected that they might be a little parched. I was a little disappointed by the level of manicuring of the fringe grasses across the course and some of the tee boxes weren't in great shape either. Having said that, these are minor gripes on what is truly a great, parkland course which I'd happily play several times over. the green fee is steep, but you do, for the most part, get what you pay for.

Always a tough but fair challenge and fantastic greens

I recently played in the Stoke Park Trophy which is their men's scratch open. Playing from the blue tees, an already pretty long course is even longer, even with the now shortened and par 4 first (previously a par 5). The extreme hot weather however means the fairways are firm and running (even despite them being watered) so the course doesn't feel too long. Greens were fantastic (running at 11 on the stimp meter), rolling true with plenty of subtle breaks and firm but holding good shots.

Played here for the first time via a winter warmer voucher. Did the Colt/Alison 18 which was nice, but not quite as spectacular as the green fee might lead you to believe. Course was also wetter and in worse condition than I would have expected for the cost of a round. Having said that, it's an interesting layout and does have some stand out holes, mainly the par 3's which are all interesting in different ways. Bunkers are also prevalent throughout both on typical driving distances from the various tees and around the greens so expect to spend some time in them. Service in and around the hotel and pro-shop was excellent as you'd expect from a 5* venue. I enjoyed the day and the course but having now played it, wouldn't rush back given the high price required to do so.

Made challenging by the newer bunkers. Extremely difficult to get much forward progress if your drive or approach lands in one. Good condition despite the weather. Very friendly staff.
