Quirky short course, leave the driver at home and test your iron play to these tricky little greens.

Southwell golf course is a good course for all handicaps. It has plenty of water traps just at the right distance. you need to think on most holes before driving and do not overhit the greens or there is a good chance yu will be in trouble

So off we went expecting an ordinary game of golf... only 5617 yards par 70, the first 9 holes inside a racing course and all for £14 our hopes were not that high! The weather was windy, cold, hot, rainy... ok typical british! Arriving we were greated by the security on the gate (choc brown lab) after the 'sniff test' we were accepted... pro shop small but well stocked.... nice club house and very very friendly, small bite before hand and 'were off' (Sorry horse pun there!) Inside the track is a thinking mans course, you can big hit but with the wind that day... irons were a must. A mixture of trees and water make this a test, the 8th is a loverly 129yrd island green, my advice = just hit the green!! Right, out of the racecourse and the next mature 9. The 10th is all about the tee shot only 301 yrds par 4 but difficult across a river. The next 8 holes again you can open up but think before you do. 17th is a dream hole of 326 yrds par 4... good tee shot and if you can hit the green in 2 and stop on it I will get you that well earned pint.... a par 3 to finish... all in all we came away happy that we have found this little gem....

A interesting course worth playing with the first 9 inside the racecourse. Few holes with water if you a little wayward.
Accuracy with your approach shot to the 17th a must!
A few of the par 4's on the back need some thought on club selection. Often a mid iron unless you really trust your accuracy. On the 10th - 9 iron off the tee - be brave at yoour own risk!!

Golfshake Team ReviewNot a massive course, but with the high winds was a great test today. Front nine is very open with just enough water and OB's to keep you honest. Back nine is more parkland and a lot tighter. Fairways and tee boxes a bit rough, but the greens were absolutely superb for this time of year.
Great little course and very friendly members on the course and in the clubhouse.

Vastly contrasting front and back nine. Opening nine holes are quite compact so accuracy is essential, especially off the tee. Back nine opens out a little more but shots still need to be picked carefully or you can play yourself into some very tight spots. Greens are exceptional and very challenging when playing from around the fringe. Highlights being the 7th, 16th and 17th.

Very enjoyable course.

A tale of two courses this one!!!!! First half is in the middle of the racecourse and is relatively straightforward as long as you are straight(ish) off the tee!!!! Nice tight greens making accuracy a must with your approaches. Back nine is totally the opposite with saucered greens making holding the green nigh on impossible on a dry day. lots of trees an sneaky little water hazards make this the tougher of the 9s. Loved it!!!!
