Now my favourite course!
Incredible course, amazing views, friendliest people but not cheap.I did a £200 GolfBreak for a dormy breakfast and one summer round, But I think I'll be back for the winter £170 for 2 rounds, dormy and breakfast which seems a good deal.
Walked the course the day before in the sunshine but very high winds (30 mph) and it looked tough. Played next day in rain for first 2 holes and then brightened up but low wind all day. I'd take the low wind conditions any day!
Really beautiful setting especially with the holes running along the shore line 1-3 and those where you face the sea (the elevated tee on 10 is just beautiful - probably my fav hole of all time!).
It is not a long course off the yellows but long enough. I scored poorly with poor driving so even though I found my ball every time in the rough ( few inches deep) but you are wedging out every time to get to the fairway. Just avoid the bunkers. I found 4 all day and 2 I just could not escape. So seriously avoid them they are some of the deepest bunkers ever!!! One chap I spoke to in the bar took 9 to get out of one!
The golf course is immaculate and the fairways just perfect. But probably the highlight is the people. Really friendly bar staff (even booking me restaurants for the evening), the Pros (Sam and James). The administrator who will help me organise my return (Jonathan) and even the cleaning ladies (Joan) recommending the best rooms for my next trip. All fabulous, friendly people.
The club house is ancient. Lots of wood and leather seats, loads of photos of past captains. Many older golfers in blazers. So very traditional feel to it. Loved it all. Just great shame the food stops at 3 (but i found a fish and chip shop in Porthcawl) but there are many other hotels/restaurants to drive to.
The dormies are really comfortable. I had a singe room which was small but the modern bathroom and comfortable bed made up for it! And opening the window in the morning I could see the first tee!
Very good practice facilities - worth driving to - only 1 minute to drive.
Can't wait to go back. Might pack a picnic for the evening.
But gotta take my A game next time!

Spectacular
Royal Porthcawl is the gem in the crown of South Wales golf for a reason. Challanging course that has some excellent variety and difficulty of holes. It's probably the best set of par 3's I have played anywhere in the UK.The conditions can make it more difficult, we had a really bad day for rain but the course held up so well. Excellent greens.

Absolute Gem
Last of our 3 course tour and what a way to finish. Pity I didn't bring my A game but the key to playing the course is keep it on the fairways and approaches close to the pins as the rough is punishing and greens are tricky to read over long distances. Luckily wind was light and greens not too fast otherwise I don't think I'd have scored a point.(Round played: Jun 2021 - Score: 96 Handicap: 13.8)

Excellent, Challenging, Lovely
What a course! One of the very best links with very attractive setup. Club house is very charming, warmth inside. Service is first-class. Practice range is very good, too. However, most important aspect is GOLF, isn't it?
Royal Porthcawl, in my opinion, is one of the best links and indeed a tough challenge. Maintenance is immaculate; clean fairway with tough rough, well-cut and true green. Course layout is not out-in, so that wind plays every direction hole by hole. Going out first 3 holes alongside the coastline is absolutely stuuning, yet very tough; headwind blowing from the sea and saving bogey, as a 15 handicapper, is a challenge. No hole is weak. Every hole has its own character. Then, course goes into inland but you can see the ocean. Tailwind makes my golf very difficult. Rolling terrain is magnificent. Back nine is also very memorable. Last hole 18 is very strong finish; hitting your driver towards the ocean in the very strong headwind. Absolutely fabulous!
True links with very attractive setting alongside Welsh coastline.

What an afternoon of golf. Classic links weather with wind dictating the day. The course is extremely enjoyable with large greens and great bunkering. Plot your way round and you'll score well. A very well designed layout with holes facing various directions and views of the sea from every hole. Staff in the pro shop and clubhouse were very welcoming and the changing facilities were superb.

amazing course
It has its reputation for a reason, the views, the setting and the quality of the fairways and immaculate greens ( which were a bit to quick for us !) although we had a bit of on and off rain the course was kind and the wind did not blow to bad.Reviewer Rating
