Royal Norwich
I played at your course 17/08/24 tee time booked at 12.30 as a two ball.I have had this course on my wish list for some time and I was glad that I managed to get a tee-time for the above weekend.
I booked the tee-time approximately a week in advance with no indication of any course maintenance being carried out the week prior to my round.
The club states that it’s a premier course with first class facilities.
I couldn’t fault the pratice range, chipping area , putting greens etc…
However, on notifying the pro in the shop that I was due to play he told us that for that day it was green flag position 1.
And duly gave us a card for this.
However on arriving at the 1st tee on the wooden board it stated that it was position 3?
A member of your club, asked if he could play with us due to him being on his own, for which we were happy to oblige. This gentleman stated to us at the 3rd Green that the correct pin position for the round was position 1. This was very confusing as we were told something else by the pro?
As we played the first hole, we noticed that the green had been dressed and subsequently all the following greens were dressed. This was not mentioned by the pro in the shop, nor was it stated on the website that this was carried out on the Wednesday, 3 days prior to our round.
Obviously the greens affected our round, and we believe we should have been made aware of this, and especially for the cost of £125 pp. Had we have been told we would have played at a different club.
I approached the pro after my round and told him my concerns regarding the above mentioned issues. The response I got was “ok thanks for letting me know, the club would take on my concerns and thanked me for raising this.”
I wanted to raise my concerns with you, as we were really disappointed in all of the above mentioned.
The round was definitely not worth the fee paid due to the above issues.

Disappointing
Fabulous looking course, great clubhouse. But their communication needs work. Failed to tell us that there were some temporary greens and failed to tell us that all there greens had been very recently tined and sanded, which made them almost impossible to putt accurately. Everyone in our group of 12 had difficulty putting.
For the price charged this was not impressive.

As this is the last visit by our society, it was somewhat of a sad occasion. The greens were in great order, which cannot be said about the fairways. Many unrepaired divots. However, the clubhouse and the pro shop staff were great, very helpful and friendly.Reviewer Rating

This club will move to new location in 2019 - Not many more opportunities to play this established course. Rolling landscape (in Norfolk!) provides good variety of views and challenges. Arrived o friendly welcome by staff. When we all assembled the pro went through the course layout which you DO need to pay attention to as the first half criss- crosses holes on the way around so be warned. Testing course which requires you to place the ball in the right part of the fairway. Greens not always easy to hit and once on demand concentration. The course was in good condition for our round. Crossing the busy road is a bit hair raising to access both parts of the course. That aside well worth a visit we enjoyed it. Bar and food also good.(Round played: Jul 2017 - Score: 93 Handicap: 14.9)

good new layout
Course layout/challenge The course is very well laid out over a large area, so you never feel like the holes are crammed together. There are 5 sets of tees, which make the length of the course anywhere from the longest in Norfolk to the shortest. Gold (137) and Blue (134) tees are assessed for men only, but the remaining 3 tees ? Silver, Black and Red are gender neutral, so assessed for men or women. We played Silver which has a slope rating of 129 for the men.Club and Facilities The clubhouse seemed to be quite large, although we didn't visit all of the facilities. A number of our party of just over 30 golfers, of a wide range of ages and handicaps, commented that the dining area which was in use had a slightly Corporate feel to it. Apparently there is a snooker table, and it was obvious other facilities were being added. The Pro-shop was well stocked, but another comment said that the stock was somewhat overpriced.
Value for money This was our corporate Spring Meeting, and as such was probably the most expensive course we have played on my memory, but I don't believe we paid the full standard rate for guests, bearing in mind the size of our party. It's also a long drive for some of our players, who travelled from Liverpool and Manchester to play.
Pace of play Tee intervals are 10 minutes, which spread out the players, but our group started with a couple of 3 balls who caught up with the members 4 balls in front, and so slowed us down. The pace though was generally acceptable.
Friendliness and hospitality Everyone we interacted with was incredibly friendly and helpful. This included changes to the number of our party, where a few had come down with Covid in the run-up to the event. The organiser was also told that they would be happy for those who had missed out a voucher for another chance to play at the same price.
Course conditions The course itself left a little to be desired. Whilst it was well laid out, there were no tee signs to indicate the shape of holes, or whether there were hidden hazards just out of sight. The tees and fairways were in good order, but there were bare patches around, which the ball would invariably find. A large number of the bunkers were marked as GUR. Not all sprinklers had yardages on them, and for those that did, we were not told whether the distances were to the front or centre of the greens. We worked out from the GPS that they are measured to the centre. The greens themselves were very, very slow, resulting in quite a number of putts left short, so leading to 3 putts. Also, the greens were extremely large (my GPS put one at 51 yards deep). The slopes on the greens made us believe they will be excellent once they have speeded up, but this would probably also mean a decent growth of grass before they can be cut to the right height. I should add that there was no starter in place, so nothing was explained to us before we played.
Practice facilities There were good practice facilities, in the way of a driving range, large putting green, although to be fair only half of this had flags, and I believe I saw an area to practice chipping.
Food and drink The food we had was excellent. Coffee and bacon roll to start, and for those who had breakfast at their hotel, the rolls were made to take away for their round. Lunch was fish and chips, which was very tasty and hot, and delivered to our tables on a rolling basis as we came off the course.

Swansong for a fine old course
When it was realised that this old Hellesdon course was to be closed and the club transferring to a new site, I left it a bit fine to make a visit, and I did actually just two weeks before closure. So a 500 mile round trip was planned and after an overnight stay, the closer you get to the course showed why indeed this long established club was having to move site.As you approach, the incessant house and retail parks are starting to squeeze in from all directions, and the course itself is dissected by the very busy road.
The clubhouse is fairly modern and functional with a decent putting green in front. Whilst the 1st tee is overlooked by the clubhouse, someone in the eons of history planted a couple of trees that hid those “awkward 1st tee shots”. This is a gentle slightly downhill par 3 well protected by four bunkers and is followed by one of the best tests of this course – traversing the busy A1067 Drayton High road – a bogey on the 1st is nothing compared to this! The next seven holes are all on this side of the road and overall, I think are the better ones, quite hilly and all different. The 2nd is a fine dogleg par 4 sharing the fairway with the 6th whilst the 3rd at stroke one, is probably the toughest on the course, uphill all the way from tee to green with OOB hedge on the left and a steep sloping fairway on the right. Four is a testing but level mid length par 4 which brings us to the 1st of only two par 5’s on the course. From an elevated tee, you drive over a deep valley onto a rising fairway favouring the left side as much as possible. The 2nd is more than likely blind into or over another hollow which for most should leave a short pitch into the green. The 6th has the aforementioned shared fairway crossing the 2nd hole and the downhill tee shot should leave a mid or short iron up a steepening hill to a very slick green that slopes steeply from back to front – leaving the ball under the flag is a distinct advantage here. Seven is a dinky par 3, level but surrounded by trees, and the short path to the 8th shows just exactly how the march of “progress” is taking shape. On the next tee, and looking over to the left are the first few of many houses that are enveloping two holes that were sold a few years ago. The 8th is actually the old 3rd hole and is a fine par 4 where the fairways slides slightly right which then turns left and up a steep hill to the green perched on the hill, aptly named Redan. Holding the ball on this green is an art in itself.
And then its back to that road – find a gap and run! The 9th is a tough and slightly quirky dog leg left where length off the tee is needed to see up towards the green, whilst at the same time this landing area slopes sharply from the left carrying many a ball away from the hole. No bunkers are needed here as you play up to a blind “punch bowl” green surrounded by many humps and hollows – be happy with a five here anyday. Ten and eleven are the two “new” holes, basically just to fill in before returning to the original course. The par 3 12th is a long par 3 and after this you are then faced with the last six holes which are basically up and down in more ways than one. After a slight right dogleg on the 13th, the 14th has a very narrow fairway back up the hill, followed by 15 down, 16 up and 17 back down again. All are very playable holes, and none are walkovers, but its just that they go up and down in the same manner that takes away some of the awe. Eighteen is a long par 4 back towards the clubhouse where a shot to the left side is advisable with the green round to the right.
So there we are, as you read this, the course has gone and the Club is now in their new home, a few miles out of the city. It is a shame that such an established course has had to bow to the march of progress, but whilst it has had the “Royal” name, the whole site, has probably been one of the lesser “Royals” - a good rolling wooded parkland course with many fine holes, but only a few outstanding ones.
On my visit, the welcome from all in the clubhouse was excellent, the courses condition overall was probably 7/10, greens being excellent but a number of the fairways still suffering from the draught of the year before which brings the score down a little
