Good course

Fantastic views on a great golf course, front 9 is higher and the two 9s are totally different with a lot of hazards

Warm and friendly welcome at this club and a course which is very much a tale of 2 x nines. The front is straightforward and mildly challenging but the back links 9 is very tough. Great greens and wonderfully scenic holes. Shot 36 points off 20.8, gross 92

unwelcoming course and club

The back 9 looks stunning but is not designed to be enjoyed by the likes of me. The margin for error is too small and the penalties too severe - 5 yards from the fairway on many holes and you'll never see the ball again. This is a typical H S Colt design where you stand on too many of the tees without being able to make out where the intended landing area is. One or two holes like that on a course add variety but here it is overdone to the point where the enjoyment is removed. You need to play the course a number of times before you can have fun because you need experience of it to have any idea where you're supposed to be aiming - as if hitting the ball where you're aiming isn't hard enough when you can actually see where you are trying to hit it! I actually hot the ball quite well for most of my round, but the constant inability to make out the target area (particularly difficult where the inner loop of holes crosses the main course causing extra confusion with extra fairways and tee boxes) and a lack of marker posts to offer any visual guidance at all, detracts from the experience. Such a shame as the dunes offer a stunning setting for what could be so much more enjoyable golfing terrain, as it is at many other courses along the welsh coastline. Only the brilliant green complexes redeem the course. they are brilliantly contoured, and the mounds and hollows around the greens provide a much more enjoyable but challenging test of the short game. If only the course offered a similar balance of enjoyment and toughness for the long game. Sadly it is skewed much too far to the tough end of the spectrum to be enjoyable for a 19 handicapper. This appears to suit the club though, as I was made to feel like a second class citizen for booking online as a visitor unaffiliated to any club. Surprise was expressed by the pro and the captain when they learned I am not a member anywhere. Why shouldnt someone who chooses to play at various courses rather than the same one every week be able to conduct themselves appropriately on a golf course! I was made to feel that they thought I probably would leave divots everywhere and play slowly, because I don't belong to a club, and that they only wanted members of other clubs to play their course, and not just any keen golfers who are prepared to pay a green fee. Well I certainly won't be rushing back, there are many more enjoyable places to play than here.

Brilliant

What a great course!
Front nine, reasonably gentle parkland. Back nine, breath-taking links.
The wind will play a part all the way round, even if it's only a gentle breeze.
Stunning run of holes between 11 and 14. 11 is a superb par 5 which twists off to the left and up the hill. 12 is a 180 par 3 where your driver is probably the best bet if the wind is in your face. 13 is the blindest of blind holes. Send a spotter up front. 14 is at the very top of the course, the views are stunning as is the dog leg.

We paled in very hot conditions and were wanrned that fairways were top dressed..an understatement they were seriously covered in sand and seed which made for unpredictable bounce and roll.
tees were well forward and on uneven surfaces. greens had unven roll. Overall we were left dissapointed after expectations from previos visit.
The pro diescribed the greens as glass...far from it.

Very cold day, frozen ground , all temp greens on and many bunkers out of play. Must try to keep ball in play on fairways, otherwise will loose ball in rough. The 13th hole, unlucky for some a relatively short hole, but is a blind 90deg dog-leg off the tee can prove costly; as I found out myself trying to cut the corner. Course itself can be a good test when playing normally, specially if the wind is up.

Visited Pyle & Kenfig in March 2016. The Professional, Dylan was very friendly and made us feel very welcome, as did their members. He even fixed my mates Odyssey putter, at no charge before going out, a true gent. The club shop is well equipped with some lovely gear, the majority of it carries their club emblem. We went in the bar beforehand to have a full breakfast at around £6-7; superb.
The weather before we were due to go out was terrible, but Dylan recommended that we do the back 9 first in the event we were unable to complete our round. The back 9 was fantastic, a true test of golf, some really amazing holes. P&K are doing some great work around the course, returning the rubble paths to grass as they used to be. The fairways and bunkers were brilliant for the time of year; the greens had been treated so were not in the best condition but I would imagine that they would be fantastic in time. Unfortunately we were unable to complete 18, so feel that we really missed this treat, so hopefully will go back again, well worth the 2 hour drive.
Thanks to Dylan and the team, we had a very enjoyable time despite the weather and would definitely recommend to others.

Had the pleasure of playing P&K today for 25 pounds. The weather was cloudy with no more than a breeze blowing so ideal conditions. Simply put, I doubt if I have had such good value from a green fee before. The course was in lovely condition and the green were a joy to putt on.

First time we played this course. Front 9 is parkland and it is all laid out in front of you not many real blind holes- all solid holes - all well laid out. Then the back 9! Some truly great holes - the type that give you the choice of laying up safely and having a difficult second long shot ... or take on long carries over an expanse of dense gorse. Brilliant, take lots of golf balls and have a go!

An enjoyable knock. The course was in very good condition, all be it a few fairways that were parched. The bunkers were as good as any i have played on a links, the sand was firm allowing for a positive attack. The greens were very good with many an underlation, poor putters beware! As previous reviewers have stated the holes in the sand dunes are brilliant. A very enjoyable day finished off with a pint and good food in a hospitable clubhouse and friendly members. One note to point out, one member was very keen to tell our party thar we should have changed our shoes in the locker rooms rather than in the car park, should this really matter in th e21st century? :-)
