What the club says: More than 100 years old, Ormskirk was laid out in the now peaceful west Lancashire countryside of Latham Park, although it was once the scene of some of the fiercest fighting throughout the English Civil Wars. Ormskirk is now known for its tight fairways, well guarded greens and water features, all of which conspire to provide a demanding but enjoyable round.
Set in 125 acres it has a total length of 6358 yards - par 70 (SSS 71). The front nine is regarded as one of the longest in Lancashire-North West.
Dress Code rules have recently been relaxed and are clearly displayed on the website.

Very good course which drained pretty quickly after some heavy rain, fair test of golf with a string par 70, in very good condition.

Great golf course

Great golf course in equally good condition. Long par fours unless you're a big hitter. Lots of bunkers so that tee shots need some thought. Tricky par threes with well protected greens.

Great society day out

Our local professional organised another society day out to Ormskirk, promising us a tough test on an immaculate golf course and he wasnt wrong with either statement. From the moment we walked in until the moment we walked out, we were looked after by the staff and the club.
This course is a course of two halves with long par four holes on the front nine (not so good for the shorter hitters) contrasting with three par threes and several shorter par fours with tight fairways surrounded on both sides by trees. Not much water on the course apart from a pond that runs between the 1st and 18th fairways but nevertheless, this course is tough!
The fairways and first cut were so smooth and lush, greens were immaculate and very true albeit a little slow due to a deluge of rain the night before, and the bunkers were superbly prepared by the ever busy greenkeeper and his staff. I cannot praise the greens and course staff enough for their presentation of their pride and joy even after the downpour the night before.
There is ample parking, the food was excellent and drinks were not overpriced. The bar staff were immaculately dressed in club uniform and everyone was so friendly. The pro shop is well stocked and the pro himself saved me buying a new all weather glove as he was convinced the weather would be good for our day out and after an initial shower or two he proved to be spot on!
I will definitely play this course again and this was the same feedback from most of those who took part.
Thankyou Ormskirk for a truly memorable day.

Fantastic course

Great people. Great course. Great staff loved the whole experience. So few people on such a lovely day. One minor issue no where to practice a full swing. Brilliant short game area though.

Idiotic dress rules and buggy from hell

I've been meaning for some time to leave a review of this club - it has a nice enough golf course, but our day was soured in two regards. Not unnaturally, in the middle of summer several of our party turned up in shorts. In my case, these were brown tailored shorts with black shoes and hose. For some reason I, and I alone, was required to wear white socks. Not having any on my person, the young lady in the shop cheerfully sold me a pair of ankle length synthetic horrors for two pounds which I wore over my knee-length cotton ones for the rest of the day. Secondly, one of our party needs a buggy to play eighteen holes, which was booked well in advance. He was given something akin to a three-wheeled quad bike, with the engine like a Harley Davidson and ride quality of a camel. Come on Ormskirk - not good enough.

Superb condition less than a week after snow

Ormskirk has really stepped up. Two days before my tee time I received an email from the Secretary asking me to call. This was to inform me that there were likely to be 2 temporary greens and to check I was still happy to tee off. The welcome in the shop on the day was extremely warm, as were the staff in the clubhouse. Considering the weather (snow and rain) just days before, the fairways and greens were fantastic (two temps on the day aside), with no standing water to be seen.
Fantastic round and I will be back.
