Nice course, very poor attitude

Played this mid-June after a few days golf before in the Nottingham area. The course does not compare to Sherwood Forest, Notts or Coxmoor but is perfectly fine with some very interesting greens.

Our visit however was ruined by 2 things:
1. The club offered us a Monday deal with a reduced green fee plus food and a drink after our game. They knew what time we were starting and the lady in the clubhouse explained the deal to me before we played. When we finished we were told the chef had left so no food was available. Nothing. Nada. No offer of a free drink either. They were just not bothered.
2. We played this course on the very very hot weekend in June and it was sweltering. One of our group (a 9-handicapper from a very respectable course) had his shirt partially untucked as he walked off the 18th green. Out of the clubhouse jumped an old codger who promptly took a photo of him and told him to dress appropriately. When informed that we had seen other members in a similar state of dress, he was told that they would also get a "strong talking to". The member then went back into the club house and sat at a table looking out with his camera by him. We don't know if this is actually legal (we are beyond caring) but this stuffy and downright rude behaviour belongs in a club from several decades ago.

Needless to say they will not be taking any more of our money (£500) for our group and we will not return.

I played here a few weeks ago with a couple of colleagues, we were shocked by how good condition it was considering the weather we had days prior to playing it. The positives were that the course was good condition and a good layout, BUT we never felt welcome. Through-out our day we felt we were interupting thier members! Also we felt that the staff were quite rude. Nobody asked us about our day or wether we enjoyed it. The pro shop staff were not very helpfull, especially trying to get out of the place!!!!!! I would probably return here BUT only if i really had too, even thought the course was good!

Superb course, but disappointing greens

An excellent venue for golf, but spoiled slightly yesterday by very slow greens, which bordered on pay and play standard as well as attitude of members with two of our party asked to tuck shirts in, with one gentleman not even in the clubhouse, but stood in the golf shop.

A great place that was spoiled a little

Open qualifier course - very good

Usually only get to play this course in their Senior Open in June, which fills up very quickly because it is so popular. It is a real challenge, which is why it is usually an Open Qualifier.

The course is well laid out, although the greens (holes 10 to 14) on the other side of the railway line at the start of the back 9 seem to have more wicked slopes than the other holes, and these greens/holes can easily ruin a good round.

A few years ago; there was some work done to reduce trees and gorse, which has improved the look, but may have reduced the difficulty.

Talking with a member I played with at this year?s Senior Open, they have seen a marked improvement in usage of the clubhouse, and the staff are renowned for being friendly and helpful. The food on offer has always been good, fresh and plenty of it, and the clubhouse facilities are first class.

There are a number of public footpaths, and occasionally, the local neighbours don't look where they are going, and can wander in front of golfers.

Overall, I love playing here, and hope to do it justice at some stage before I get too old to reach the long par 4's in regulation.

Excellent course in great condition. Tough challenge for all golfers with a particularly tough closing four holes, a tough 167 yd par 3 (15), a long 426 yd par 4 with very undulating green (16), another tough par 4 - especially off the whites (460 yds vs 404 off the yellows) with another sloping green and finally a shortish, but tricky par 5. All three final holes often play into the wind! Top tip, everything, greens, fairways etc slope in towards the railway line that bisects the course.

I used to only get to play this course in March, when there was little run on the ball and it was no surprise that SSS was above par from their winter tees (in use until April).

Played in late June in their Senior Open, and it was good to get some run on the ball and feel like I could reach the longer par 4's reasonably easily. It was a roasting hot day when we played, and they had iced drinks in the 'half-way house' which we passed 3 times in total. The greens were running true, but many of us could not cope with the slopes, and there were various reports of people 4 putting a number of them! Until someone pointed it out to me, I had not realised that there are a lot of right to left slopes on many holes (including the greens).

The food was good, and all in all we were well looked after on the day. The value for money of their Senior Open is undoubted, although I am unaware of the charges outside of this competition, except to say that the 'society' I play in which used to visit in Spring moved courses this year because of the increased cost of playing Northamptonshire County GC.

Usually only get to play this course in Spring when there is little or no run on the ball, and that makes this a difficult task. It's used as a PGA qualifier and is quite tough for us mere mortals who can't drive it 260 yards plus. It's always well kept, and a new head greenkeeper in 2016 is making even more improvements happen. There are usually areas where work is being carried out - listen to the starter and take relief if you get in the wrong places - this game is difficult enough without punishing yourself. Watch out for walkers - there are a number of rights of way around and across the course, and I speak from experience when I say they don't look out for golfers AT ALL.

SSS is over par which gives some indication of how tough this course usually plays. We played in early October in a fixture re-arranged from March (because of snow). Course was not at it's very best (according to one of the greenkeepers) but still very good. Greens a little slower than usual, but almost all had major slopes to be negotiated. I managed to avoid the bunkers, but those who found them seemed to find them easy to play out of, and the fairways were uniform length and in good condition. Looking forward to playing it again.

My first visit, and I will definitely be back - thought the course was great. Downside to playing in March was that we were off the green (winter) tees, but still has a SSS of 69 against par of 70 so a decent test of your golf. Plans are to move back to proper tees just two days later on 31st March 2012.

Not particularly long until you play off the back tees (6721 yards), when the par of 70 has a SSS of 73.

Bunkers were in good order, greens were quite quick for early in the year. There was some work ongoing, but the greenkeepers were reasonably unobtrusive, and stepped aside so as not to disturb our round. Wish I could say the same for the local residents who walk around the bridle paths talking away without a thought for who the disturb, and in one case without a thought for their own safety, when two little old ladies walked straight past us as we played into a par 3 - the bridle path went in front of the tee, and they were just about to walk in front of our 4th player teeing off!!

Over all a very good course.
