You wonder why the game of golf is in decline and why it's so difficult for clubs to attract members and repeat visitors. Well my experience at Newbury and Crookham today may provide some insight it why this might be!

The course was in great condition, the staff were attentive and most very welcoming. However on the 5th hole the course Marshall decided it was necessary to stop my round of golf to make a point about the clubs dress code, pointing out that my Footjoy sock were not acceptable with shorts as they were not white! Whilst I respect the need for standards, and a clubs views in this respect, but I fail to see the point in mentioning it to a player who is a third of the way through there round! Although I accept the colour of my FOOTJOY socks were not compliant with the clubs very prescriptive dress code, I really do not understand the point making a point of it once the player has been allowed to start the round! Its a shame that one individual who obviously takes great pride in his job, failed to realise how his poorly timed intervention has impact on my societie's perception of the course and as a consequence we will choose to spend our money elsewhere in the future! Great shame for the team to have been let down by a jobsworth of a Marshall!

Not a long course but challenging

Society day and despite the heavy rain the night before the course played very well with unexpectedly fast greens as they had been ironed two days before. Lovely setting and some good risk reward and challenging holes No 17 is a great par 3 but so are the others on this course.

Just top quality

A lovely course, especially with some fantastic par threes. Staff and service also excellent, even in these difficult times. Do make the effort to play, you wont be disappointed.

A great course with green and tee boxes in very good conditions and the fairways were better than expected due to the dry weather and in comparison to others I’ve played recently
The course is really well designed and laced out with no 2 holes the same, other than from the 1st to the 2nd, which the pro-shop advised me of, it was very easy to find your way around too

Absolutely sublime golf course, in excellent condition with a nice challenge on most holes. Well worth the money and one of the best courses I've ever played at. Watch out, the greens can be lightening fast in the summer!

Great course dry fairways made staying on the fairways a tad hard but good anyway very up and down course would recommend a golf buggy unless you are fit which I am not . But overall a great course very challenging for all players

This is a gem of a course. It has an excellent mix of holes, great conditions of the greens and a challenge for all golfers. Hole 2 & 3 but great openers to a round. I found the course by chance online and I am so glad I did. It has elements of other great Surrey courses like Wentworth, Woking and Hindhead and for £25 its great value as well. We hired a buggy as my friend is recovering from an op and I am glad we did because it is quite hilly in places and the buggy was a bonus.
Only distraction is poor hole signage. I think the club should invest now in many more "next hole signs "etc as we got lost on a number of occasions and nearly missed out on 2 holes. As you leave 10,I think, the path leads you straight to 13 but the next hole to play is tucked away to the right and with no signs it is confusing.
Pro shop staff were very welcoming and helpful. I wished I lived closer to the course as I would really like to join this club.

Don't let the fact the course measures less than 6000 fool you, this is a great test for all abilities. The third is a delighful par 3 into an arena type bowl, with a large green than runs back to front a bogie is a result. The 6th is another par three which is procted by bunkers left and right, accuracy is the key to scoring on this hole. Each hole had it's owm merit, and I'm sure if you visited you wouldn't leave disappointed.

Course is in good condition with some interesting holes. Quite congested in some areas though with Tees crossing each other and tees and greens close (too close) together which could be a problem if it's busy.
Decent clubhouse but it would benefit from a bigger patio area to take in the great views on a summers day! Good Pro-shop.

A very good course that challenges every aspect of your golf game. Can be easy if you are consistant off the tee but overall a good course. The front 9 is quite hilly and also the par 3 3rd is one of the best looking par 3's in the area. The clubhouse feels a bit strict as it is an old and established course which strict golfing rules. Overall a very good course and i would like to play it again.

Course played well despite heavy rain in previous days and all bunkers were free of water.

Lovely course with some interesting holes and challenging par 3's. Pity I always seem to play it when it's been wet and playing a little longer than the 5710.

Beautiful afternoon / evening

Only played the front 9 in the evening...teed off at about 4pm. The light as the sun was setting made it difficult to see the ball, but it really made the place look beautiful. Loved it.
The greens and fairways were in very good condition, but it still had draining issues in a few places.
