Mitcham GC. A great course hidden away in urban SW London

Not played at Mitcham GC before and invited to play in the Seniors Open, so rude not to accept. The entrance is a little strange, through the car park of Mitcham Junction BR car park, but simple enough using google maps. The clubhouse is an old style 1920's-1930's building with the history that comes with it, but with some modern touches. The locker room is updated, with new showers and facilities. Very nice. Pro-shop is small, but has all you'd need. Practice facilities are OK. Fairly large putting green, 2 small driving nets, but didn't see a chipping area. The course itself is a challenge. Classed as an inland links, Mitcham definitely lives up to that. The teeboxes were a little uneven, but not as bad as some I've played. Rolling links fairways with plenty of slopes and contours that give you shots with the ball in various positions around your feet, if you manage to keep your ball on them. Due to the weather they were very dry and the grass was straw-like, just like most courses at this time. The greens were well tended and were quite quick, with some subtle breaks and slopes. A good test. There are some good holes that make you think about shot selection. My favourite holes, (and if you play, yours will probably differ) were, the 4th a shortish par 4, a sweeping left to right dogleg, across the tramway to the short par4 6th, with a pond to the front left of the green, the par 4 7th with OOB all down the right and a copse of small dwarf trees guarding the green, the 10th, par 5, another sweeping dogleg, but right to left, the 11th a long-ish par 4 that tempts you to go for the green, if your drive finds the fairway, the 15th a tight drive to a narrow fairway the sweeps away to the left and the 18th a long-ish par 3 with trouble in front of the green for mis-hit shots. Hospitality of the members and staff were excellent with a special mention to John Botting (Seniors Chairman), for organizing a great day, to Mitcham GC member Peter White, who was in our group and guided us around the course pointing out dangers, etc, to General Manager, Dennise Coker who managed the clubhouse and staff superbly and to all the bar and catering staff who were both helpful and friendly. Mitcham is a good course that is well worth a visit. I will be returning to see how it plays when the course isn't so dry.

Exceptional Value for Money

Deceptively challenging course which can catch out the unwary. Greens are in excellent condition and the fairways were pretty good too despite the dry April we've had. There isn't a driving range but there are a couple of nets and a practice bunker area. The clubhouse is very pleasant and competetively priced. I would definitely recommend a visit - it's exceptional value for money.

Great Value

The green were in extremely good condition and the staff very friendly and helpful. The fairways were good but very firm and cracked in places due to the weather. A map of the course would have been useful. Would play again.

Good course - would revisit

Good value for ?21 weekend twilight. Interesting course with some challenging holes, though condition was not the best and the greens had been hollow tined so were bumpy. Super convenient from London - right next to the railway station.

Mitcham is a good little course.Easily located by a train station, its very close to clapham so for convenience it cant be beaten. Greens are very good for the price. Fairways are usually pretty good, although undulate a lot. Good tee shots can be punished randomly. Course isn't long but is good fun to play.

Mitcham is my local course and one which I played for the third or fourth time today. This is by no means a long course, and looking at the first and second, you may think it's also rather boring. However, appearances are deceptive and if you can overlook the scorecard and seemingly wedged-in location between main roads and railway lines, then a round at Mitcham can be very rewarding indeed. Granted, it is not the most difficult course in Surrey by a long way, but it requires course management skills and accuracy, and the rugged, undulating fairways can often reward an excellent drive with a difficult lie. The trees guarding the 7th green can really ruin your score, and the golfer who takes a long iron off the tee rather than the driver is rewarded with the easier approach on quite a few holes.

The course looked excellent today and the greens were great. Conditions were difficult in the rain but this course drains really well and there was no surface water whatsoever. Pro shop and bar are as good as you would expect - have all the essentials and are reasonably priced, but nothing to write home about. For 17 Pounds, it's well worth a look. I really like this course and will be back. It's not spectacular, and not long, and not impossibly difficult... however, it's not easy, it's not expensive, it's not snobby, it IS in great condition, it IS a little bit rugged, and I really hope you will enjoy it as much as I did today.
