Abysmal

The worst golf course I have ever played. In absolutely disgraceful condition. The greens were totally unplayable. The grass was stupidly long all over the course and it was covered in goose excrement. The whole place was a muddy and wet mess, but they can’t do a lot about how much it’s rained. Was £15 but even that low price was too much for this joke of a course. The car park was overgrown and looked like the place closed down years ago. It really should not be open and needs shutting down. Do not play here.

Terrible condition

Played yesterday, played there a couple of times in recent years and always thought it was a reasonable course. In its current condition though it is unplayable.

I was suspicious when I booked as it seemed too cheap for a Saturday morning round. The fairways were ok, needed to be trimmed as were like playing from the first cut. The light rough was covered in clippings which made it near on impossible to find your ball if you did stray just off the fairway. The greens were the real issue though as they were absolutely devoid of grass. The worst was the 11th that had deep gouges and craters all over the “green”.

It really seems like this course hasn’t had any real maintenance in months. The cost might seem cheap but in its current state absolutely avoid as it is still a total waste of time and money. We walked off after the 11th after 2hrs and 45 minutes even though the course appeared to be empty when we teed off

It really should be a decent course as the layout is interesting and the setting is lovely

Popped in latish Saturday afternoon on a whim as hadn't played here in some years. Whilst seemingly good value at £15, sadly my review would echo all the comments made recently below. Essentially the course is in a major state of disrepair and borderline unplayable if you go off the fairway due to semi that's far too long still with cuttings left meaning you stand a very good chance of not being able to locate your ball. The greens are unputtable due to the moss etc that's been allowed to grow. All bunkers are also essentially GUR due to lack of sand and other plant growth within them though not indicated as such. It's a real shame as the layout itself is very good and with some time and effort being put into maintenance could be an excellent pay and play course. Whomever currently owns it needs to spend some cash though, because as it stands its simply not worth anyone playing it, even for practice.

Awful condition

Haven't played here in 4-5 years and unfortunately this club has been neglected to the point it now resembles a zombie apocalypse rather than a managed golf course. Even as you drive in the car park is now over run by weeds and overgrown, signs look neglected. Pro shop boarded up and you check in now around the back in what was the club house and a make shift office. The course itself is in awful condition. Tee boxes are mounds of overgrown grass with dry patches of dirt, fair ways are like a badly cut fringe elsewhere and rough is left to its own devices. Greens are scorched grass/mud, no true rolls at all. Sadly what once was a nice, affordable long open course has been left to become out of control and unenjoyable. I booked to play a cheap round with a newbie and we only played 7 holes before calling it a day. Only plus was friendly pro who checked us in and affordable price. BUT even for the price I wouldn't play again. My local pitch and put and school course is maintained to a higher standard. Sadly I feel its either commissioned to close or its future will be to close very soon.

Disappointing to see how a once superb golf course is falling apart. Greens and bunkers are in real need of attention even considering the time of year. Fairways are reasonable but all over Course is struggling hence very low green fee

Overpriced

Unfortunately since the Crown Golf sale the new owners have not invested any money in the course or facilities. They has resulted in slow bumpy greens and overgrown tee boxes. However they are still happy to take ?160 for a fourball when it should be a lot less. No food apart from bacon rolls and getting a drink afterwards is not easy as choice is very limited. Won't be visiting again for a while as they have grand plans but there could take a year or 2. Shame as it's a decent layout with some good holes.

Greenkeepers on holiday??!

Disappointed by the course conditions last weekend - the only round I can remember anywhere in 25 years where the grass clearly hadn't been cut for at least several days. The fairways were like rough, and dandelions covered the tee boxes and fairways. It was like playing in a meadow.

On our one previous visit last October we were amazed how good the greens were despite incredibly wet conditions, sadly however they were pretty shabby this time, bobbley and patchy. Bunkers were all unloved too, and winter rules were stated as in effect.

The chap in the clubhouse told me the new owners (7 months in) are awaiting planning permission for a course redesign with Nick Faldo's architecture company, so I can only guess they won't invest much if anything in the course in the meantime.

It's a real shame as we think the layout is great but in this condition it's no where near worth the ?40 we paid unfortunately. The driving range wasn't open either.

Overall, Merrist Wood has good potential but is best avoided until they've invested in the course conditioning, and at least cut the grass.

Can’t younderstand what has happened to the greens at Merrist Wood. Have played there many times and the wise I have ever seen them. I know we have had a very dry summer. But every green seem to have half a green that looked like it had received no water at all. Luckily we are Crown members and didn’t have to pay, but if I did would have been asking for my money back. Its a course we like to play but in its present state be surprised if it will recover this year. There were even cracks in some of the greens

Really poorly maintained and awful pace of play

Really disappointing round on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

- The fairways are a real mess. We were told they'd been cut 3 times in the week leading up to the Saturday - there there were piles of dead grass everywhere and the cut on the fairway made it feel like you were playing every shot from the rough.

- The rough, well, good luck finding your ball if you're even a few feet off the fairway. Terrible.

- Even the tee boxes were in awful condition with long grass coming up over your shoes.

- The greens were bobbly and the grass was clearly too long in most cases.

- The pace of play really topped it off and killed our game - 5hr 15 for us to get round as a 4 ball, waiting on pretty much every tee box.

Seemed a combination of letting too many people on the course and delays with people looking for balls in the overgrown rough.

The course layout is interesting enough, but the condition and pace of play was just appalling.

No fairways - grass was as long as the rough

I wonder if this might be a nice course in the summer, but unfortunately it was extremely wet which meant they hadn't been out to cut the fairways. There was therefore literally no difference between the fairways and rough and it made finding your ball after a decent drive very tough.

Oh dear, where do I start. Played 18th November and there hadn\\\\\\\'t been a great deal of rain lately so I dread to think what this course is like during a wet period. Tees were no toot bad but could do with a cut. The fairways were shocking. Full of worm casts and flatted mud. Even though we had winter rules it was hard to find any grass without mud near it. The greens were very slow and patchy craters on them. They were however playable. It took me 14 holes to get used to the speed of the greens and to ignore minor breaks. Hit the ball straight and hard was order of the day. The rough was terrible with mud and leaves and no ball cleaning. I actually scored a respectable ( for the conditions ) 27 pts. I went in one bunker and there was a decent amount of sand in it but some bunkers looked pretty compacted sand. This course has a great layout with some fantastic holes and strategically place bunkers and hazards. Some long par 4s that test your skills. It may be fantastic come spring and summer but not a winter course. I would ring ahead and ask pro shop course condition before booking.

Parched

I like Merrist Wood and it is a good layout. Sadly the hot weather has absolutely couched the course. The fairways were bone dry, as you would expect but the tees were so dry, the grass had died and it was just dust on several of them. The greens were bumpy and needed some attention.
There was little sand in the bunkers and the whole course felt neglected.
The kitchen was closed although there was some hot food available behind the bar and the pro shop was shut, with a small offering of balls and gloves in one corner of the bar.
It was a real shame to see the course and facilities like this. The staff were very friendly though, which was good.

Not that bad

We played here as our course was shut due to the rain. I’d read the reviews and didn’t have much hope.
The bunkers and greens need some love and tlc as does the whole course but in terms of playability it’s really not that bad. It has some absolutely stunning holes and with the wind blowing it was a challenge.
It’s got some stunning long par 4’s, and challenging par 3’s.
If I was a millionaire I’d buy this course as it’s got the length and views, lakes, challenging bunkers, and great size greens. Yes it could be so much better but it was great fun all the same.

Very disappointed

I've played Merrist Wood many times over the last ten or so years and was always impressed with the club and course.
Unfortunately, I was shocked to see the state of the club and course when I arrived on Saturday. From when you arrive in the car park, usually well kept and tidy, the signs of neglect were obvious and this continued into the clubhouse and on to the course.
Still a great course but not very well kept at all. Untidy fairways and bunkers and long grass cuttings just left on the fairways and first cut. Even managed to lose a ball on the fairway?disappeared under the grass cuttings.
It's such a shame that such a good course have been let to slip like this
