Poor and not great value

Course has a nice layout but to charge 30+ in winter is madness.

Course was waterlogged and greens in poor condition. Course has potential and has nice layout with some beautifully shaped holes but is very overpriced for what it is in winter

Course waterlogged

Lovely course with great holes however not sure the course should have been open the fairways were all fenced off and completely waterlogged
Greens were very good however why don’t people repair their pitch marks

From tee boxes to greens this course is in aweful condition. Such a great layout course too. It has got worse over time to the point now it\'s unplayable.

Mr M Foster

Can’t younderstand what has happened to the greens at Merrist Wood. Have played there many times and the wise I have ever seen them. I know we have had a very dry summer. But every green seem to have half a green that looked like it had received no water at all. Luckily we are Crown members and didn’t have to pay, but if I did would have been asking for my money back. Its a course we like to play but in its present state be surprised if it will recover this year. There were even cracks in some of the greens

Really poorly maintained and awful pace of play

Really disappointing round on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

- The fairways are a real mess. We were told they'd been cut 3 times in the week leading up to the Saturday - there there were piles of dead grass everywhere and the cut on the fairway made it feel like you were playing every shot from the rough.

- The rough, well, good luck finding your ball if you're even a few feet off the fairway. Terrible.

- Even the tee boxes were in awful condition with long grass coming up over your shoes.

- The greens were bobbly and the grass was clearly too long in most cases.

- The pace of play really topped it off and killed our game - 5hr 15 for us to get round as a 4 ball, waiting on pretty much every tee box.

Seemed a combination of letting too many people on the course and delays with people looking for balls in the overgrown rough.

The course layout is interesting enough, but the condition and pace of play was just appalling.

No fairways - grass was as long as the rough

I wonder if this might be a nice course in the summer, but unfortunately it was extremely wet which meant they hadn't been out to cut the fairways. There was therefore literally no difference between the fairways and rough and it made finding your ball after a decent drive very tough.

Oh dear, where do I start. Played 18th November and there hadn\\\\\\\'t been a great deal of rain lately so I dread to think what this course is like during a wet period. Tees were no toot bad but could do with a cut. The fairways were shocking. Full of worm casts and flatted mud. Even though we had winter rules it was hard to find any grass without mud near it. The greens were very slow and patchy craters on them. They were however playable. It took me 14 holes to get used to the speed of the greens and to ignore minor breaks. Hit the ball straight and hard was order of the day. The rough was terrible with mud and leaves and no ball cleaning. I actually scored a respectable ( for the conditions ) 27 pts. I went in one bunker and there was a decent amount of sand in it but some bunkers looked pretty compacted sand. This course has a great layout with some fantastic holes and strategically place bunkers and hazards. Some long par 4s that test your skills. It may be fantastic come spring and summer but not a winter course. I would ring ahead and ask pro shop course condition before booking.

Booked a tee time at merrist wood ..and day before we played it rained called pro shop the morning of the game to see if the course was okay or in fact open ...!! Was informed it was ok ...We turned up tee off and walked down the first , it was a bog, up to are ankles in mud , (COURSE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSED) Walked off after 9 holes as it was impossible to play. Do not play this course if it's been raining.....!!

Was a member, and now they have turned into a pay and play. Really great people work at MW, course is good in the summer, but close to impossible in the winter due to the mud. They should have treated the members better as well when the handover happened.

Just another surrey course

Not a bad course but you can see lockdown has taken its toll. Fairways rock hard with just brown burnt grass most bunkers with little sand and rock hard beneath . Rough bearing in mind rock hard fairways was too deep too soon one bounce on fairway wrong direction and its lost ball. Greens were ok if not bumpy in places.

Very wet

Debating if the course should of been open. Greens were actually very good however the fairways were almost unplayable. We have had a wet spell but drainage must need improvement. If you were a member here the winter months must be a write off.

Needs lots of TLC!!!

General layout of course is good with some interesting holes, greens were in pretty decent condition, but the overall condition of the course was poor, Tee-boxes looked unkept, stones in the Bunkers, fairways were particularly bad with heavy grass cuttings left on the fairway and light ruff. With some investment it could be a nice course but it badly needs quite a bit of money spent on it to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

Played behind a 2 ball who were accompanied by a 1 year old boy & a dog. Terrible sight on the course & when mentioned in the pro shop the 2 staff members were speechless and didn't even offer any sort of apology. Not what you expect from a course that requires all players to remove their hats in the clubhouse.

Not a course I could recommend in its current condition. In order to get a reasonable lie the semi is attractive compared to the fairways which are in most places scorched and rock hard. When you do find grass and can take a divot the course plays as long as previous reviews suggest.
Water hazards and holes in general are in the main a little 'samey', although there are a few that appeal to the eye.
Rough is currently 3 feet tall, so avoid at all cost!
Greens were fast and in reasonable condition although some are almost beyond a joke, with pins on swales so severe that two putts should be celebrated as you would a chip in!
All in all a disappointing experience for a mid handicapper who struggles on tight lies.

The course is a nice layout and should be a joy to play, were it not for the appalling state of the fairways. It's pretty poor when you'd rather be in the semi rough than on the fairway to ensure you get a reasonable lie!

Greens were pretty good on the whole as they seem to be at most Crown Golf establishments, a couple were bobbly.

Bunkers (and there are a few) have a good level of sand in them and play pretty well, just watch out for the foot prints that some of the players like to leave behind for you to find...

Sat nav in the buggies was a great help for yardages as the stroke saver is the worst I've ever come across.

Glad I played mid week as the condition of the course at present certainly doesn't warrant the £40 weekend green fee price tag.
