First time back since Hotel Chain Changed

Good condition, was interested to see how the new Hotel Chain was looking after the course after they scrapped the pro shop for a childrens arcade area!

Challenging Greens

Great course in excellent condition, with some interesting holes but make sure you use the practice green and spend some time on there. The greens were in fantastic condition, undulating, lightening fast and some breaks that you wouldn't believe ???????

Nice course with great scenery

Played Hollins Hall a few times now and have always enjoyed playing it when under the Marriott brand but was disappointed on this occasion. Hotel showing signs that the course is secondary to the accommodation, pro shop now gone instead it is a small amusement arcade with just a desk for the golf check in. Course showing signs of neglect, tee beds scruffy, fairways not mown, no definition. Greens were good but too quick for this type of course. Shame as it could be an excellent golf course with some great holes and lovely scenery, so come on Elite get it sorted.

Great Course

Early morning round in slightly damp conditions. The greens are in fantastic condition, albeit very fast and particularly slippery downhill! Every hole is unique with an interesting mix of challenges: length, water, bunkers - the trees are becoming more established at the sides of fairways. All round enjoyment and amazing views across the valley. (Don’t forget to get a lift in a buggy to the first tee unless you are very fit!!)

Excellent

I've played many of the courses in the Leeds area and this is up there with the best. An excellent layout with some amazing views. There's often plenty of space off the tee left and right, but many holes are littered with many bunkers to catch you out. The real star of the course are the greens which are in great condition, large and very undulating. It certainly pays to know their layout or failing that have a short game that gets you within 10 feet. If you find yourself in the wrong place your second putt can be as far away as your first.

A real test

Yes the walk to the first is a hike (the pro shop will drive you up) & yes the greens are large, undulating and fast, but it's a real test of your short game. Varied course that gets better as you progress round.

Fantastic

Without doubt the best course in the area. Greens were great and well maintained. I’ve seen a few comments about the hill up to the first and I’m not sure why this is an issue as there’s a free buggy to take you up there.

Lovely setting and great challenge for all levels. I’ve played every course in the area and this one is, without doubt, the best.

Hilly and challenging, slow play!

Played on spec on a Sunday afternoon. The standard pay and play rate was good, the £5 resident rate reduction to £17.50 made it extremely good value. Not overly long but long enough. However, length isn't this course's defence, it is its undulating, often hilly, layout with the majority of greens raised up with significant drop-offs, and the fact that much of the course is exposed to the moorland winds. The back 9 is the more interesting of the two, but both 9s have some short and medium par 4s that need plotting and one or two genuinely good-looking holes.. Not a lot of need for driver but that's no bad thing given that miss the fairway on several holes and the deep stuff kicks in very quickly. Standing out for me were the greens. All undulating and very well kept, I didn't find a straight put all the way round. Only two gripes, one major one minor. The minor gripe was the state of the tees; not that they were awful but they weren't great, and that stood out given the excellent state of the rest of the course. My major gripe was the fantastically steep, long slog up to the 1st tee. It was a good job the tee wasn't busy, as I had to take a few minutes to get my breath back at the top. For me, that steep slog was bordering on unacceptable. Would play there again, but unless you're fit it strikes me you are almost forced to shell out for a buggy.

Tough & Challenging

We were lucky enough to have a free four ball and travelled from Newcastle. The hike to the first tee box is the toughest uphill stretch but following that you are met with a tough 18 hole layout. The wind was strong on the day we played and it made scoring tough. The mown grass next to the fairways also an interesting and at times tough place to be. That said it was well maintained, undulating greens and a solid place to play golf. The highlight the unique hole playing to the viaduct - very good and even made a par.

changed ownership

No longer a Marriott resort now owned by Britannia Hotels. Course still in fairly good nick though greens were a bit bobbly though quick ( a dangerous combination!)
Friday afternoon and we had the place to ourselves.
