What The Club Says
The course is fairly flat, apart from the second and third holes, and therefore offers a very comfortable round for players of all ages. Members tend to play 2 ball games and are especially keen on foursomes, allowing just three hours (or less) for a game. Speed of play is important to Huntercombe and slow play is actively discouraged. The modern trend for four hour rounds is seen as an anathema to the Members of Huntercombe.

Very interesting and enjoyable course
Huntercombe Golf Club is a great choice for golfers who appreciate traditional course architecture, fast greens and a genuine sense of history. Designed by Willie Park Jr. and opened in 1901, it remains remarkably faithful to its original character.The course is not especially long at around 6,300 yards, but it is far more demanding than the yardage suggests. Its defining feature is an extraordinary number of grass hollows or ?pots?'more than 100 of them?which replace many conventional bunkers and create a wonderfully strategic challenge around the fairways and greens. A number of standard bunkers have also been added fairly recently.
The greens are a particular highlight: quick, true and heavily contoured, rewarding a good approach shot while punishing poor positioning. The 2nd and 3rd provide the main elevation changes, while holes such as the 7th, 15th and short 17th offer some of the most memorable golf on the course.
What makes Huntercombe particularly appealing is its quiet, understated character. It doesn't feel like a modern championship course trying to impress you with length or dramatic water hazards. Instead, the interest comes from clever shaping, natural terrain, mature woodland and subtle strategic decisions. We were made to feel very welcome by all who we interacted with, from clubhouse staff to greenkeepers and members.
The clubhouse is traditional rather than flashy, which suits the character of the club. One unusual feature is the emphasis on pace of play: three-hour rounds are considered normal, reflecting the club's preference for two-ball golf and foursomes. They do however make an exception for societies such as ours, where we are allowed to play in 3 balls, with bookings on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Emphasis is made on keeping up with the groups in front, and a maximum of 24 players in a group. Our booking always fills up quickly, with reserves, so you can tell how popular the course is.
Overall: Huntercombe is a very enjoyable and distinctive historic course. It may not offer the spectacular views or length of some of England's more famous venues, but the quality of the architecture and the ingenious grass-pot hazards make it a course that stays in the memory. I'm already looking forward to playing here again in 2027.

Beaut
Having trekked round most of the courses in Oxfordshire, it was time to play this hidden gem. Paid £30 for a summer twilight round, very good value. Pro shop very friendly, every member I met on the course super friendly as well. Easy to navigate, although I nearly got lost between 5 & 6.Like most courses at the moment, fairways need some rain, but the greens were in perfect condition, and as others have said, absolutely treacherous if you end up in the wrong place.
Long enough to be a challenge, tight enough to be a challenge, highly recommended.

Hidden Gem
Huntercombe, I don't think, is not a name that I remember croping up in a lot of lists of great courses, which is a shame because its an absolute delight. There are lots of excellent tree lined fairways, and greens that are as smooth as you could hope for. It's not without its quirks, with tiers on some greens that wouldn't look out of place on a rollar coaster.I don't remember too many simple holes, but instead there were plenty with mounds and bush filled craters just waiting to claim an errant shot. I guess they're there to make up for the limited number of bunkers. The fairways generally aren't the widest you'll ever play, but they're not the tightest either. For the added views I'd probably pick holes 1 & 2 as my favourites, but there are a number of others that would run them close.
Is there anything that could be classed as a disappointment? The noise from the roads means you never quite get that away-from-it-all feel, and the flag colours don't really conform to the norm (FYI, blue flag front, red flag middle, and yellow flag back). Hey, the club is over 100 years old and it can do what it wants, and I should have just read the back of the card earlier. So, nothing to really stop you from playing here.
I played here for £30 for a January twilight time, which I think it certainly decent value. You won't see the course at its best, but you will see a course that's better at coping with winter than most other courses in the area. I didn't get to see inside the clubhouse, so I can't really comment on that.
There's a Red Kite on the club's merchandise, and I did get to see one or two flying above the course, so that was a bonus.
Would I recommend the course or go back? Yes to both!

Amazing greens
Lucky to play this members only club with a society. Not a long course but the greens are so undulating if you're in the wrong spot a 4 putt or worse is on the cards.(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 100 Handicap: 18.8)
