Good test in good weather, little shabby round edges

Halifax Golf Club is tucked away in a quiet corner of the moors and you really get that quiet impression when you turn up there. The pro shop is freshly stocked with new apparel and gear but a little old fashioned in lay out, same goes for the clubhouse.

Out on the course you are given an opening par 5 dogleg right to behind which is a nice steady opening hole and then a good par 3 on the second.

After the second the course goes downhill considerably for the next couple of holes with an odd design, shared fairways and almost impossible approaches to the fourth green. After those two shambles of holes however the course does then begin to open out into a true moorland test. A couple of the holes in the back 9 require a long accurate drive if you want to make birdie.

Overall, I enjoyed my 82 round HGC, I was impressed by the difference in hole style and layout but disappointed with a lack of green keeping on teeboxes and greens. To mention, the greens were rock solid and fast but not in very good condition.

If this course was tidied up around the tees and greens and fairways given a more dramatic cut to juxtapose against the Heather in the rough it could Be one of Yorkshire’s finest.

Brilliant course, best course I've played in a long time. Was in fantastic condition, and nice and quiet on a weekday. Excellent value, great variety of holes and probably the best individual hole (17th) that I've ever played..

A real test of golf

Played this course during quite adverse weather conditions. Driving rain and windy. All the holes are different and are challenging. The views from the top are stunning. Everybody very welcoming from the Pro to the staff behind the bar. Catering was excellent and highly recommended.

Played in a mid summer open this year and was blown away by the place. Everyone talks about the 17th but this does not do justice to the rest of the course. Very strategic off the tee with super wide fairways that challenge you to leave good angles into the green. How they got it round here in 1912 I\'ll never know!!!\Highlights for me where...\2nd shot into the first hole, strange ravine right and a green with 4 foot of slope leading down from left side, tough to know where to miss.\The elevated 4th green. Wow! Small target and a shot filled with drama.\The short, driveable 11th. Totally blind with 2 marker posts. Reminded me of tenby, another braid course.\Wonderful old clubhouse with some relics from the clubs golden past. An absolute treat for anyone who appreciates a good test.

Played Halifax Ogden in a 4bbb Open medal comp. Friendly welcome by all at the club, top breakfast. Course was quite wet in places, some greens quite patchy but rolled reasonably well. Very up hill down dale sort of course, need to be reasonably fit to play here on a regular basis. Can imagine very tough to score in windy conditions as quite exposed. Superb par 3 16th from very elevated tee. Will return for sure.

If you want a perfect manicured course with great greens don't play here! If you want something abit of a challenge and different then this course is the one! I thought it was great my playing partner wasn't a great lover of it. However we both agreed it is a must play just for the 17th alone! What a hole!!!!
