A very nice public municipal course
Firstly, the thing you need to know is that Great Salterns Golf course is attached to Portsmouth Golf Centre. The golf centre itself has a well stocked pro-shop and a decent drivung range, even though I didn't use it. There are no catering facilities or bar, but its on the same site as The Farmhouse restuarant, so not a problem really. The course itself has some really nice holes and a few a real challenge. There is a good mix for all handicap levels and is worth a visit if your in the area. With the course being just over 5600 yards, it took nearly 4.5 hours, which is a little too long in my opinion, but nevertheless, I enjoyed the round. As Great Salterns is a municipal course, it doesn't get the real course maintenance that it deserves. The fairways could do with a mowing, the tee boxes as well. The bunkers are ok with a good amount of sand, but several don't have rakes, which is a shame. The greens though are very good, It's worth a trip to play if you're in the area.(Round played: Jun 2019 - Score: 88 Handicap: 18.7)

Once only
OK, so it's late November and teeing off of mats might be acceptable. What isn't acceptable however is the winter price of £22 for 18 holes when the fairways and greens do not appear to have received any care for months. The noise of the nearby busy roads is a constant and the view beyond the course is OK if you like 1960's industrial estates. In fairness, if the course was looked after then there are some enjoyable holes. But there are lots of other courses in the area that are much better value for money at this time of year. And to wrap up, there was no rake in the 18th Bunker which was the only one i went in all day!Reviewer Rating

and we teed off at 6.55am, when the gentleman came for our money we were charged £22 which is very steep considering we had to tee off on mats that must be 20 yrs old at least and the course is not in good condition at all , I think that Portsmouth city council should start spending some money on this course to bring it up to a good standard.
