Not Impressed

You would think through lockdown some courses would have improved. Not here, uneven tees, patchy greens, bunkers with and without sand, in general a very untidy golf course. Apparently there is a waiting list to join this club (so members tell me), well lets hope they're not waiting for golf course improvements!

Very poor the fairways are so dry and bare the grass is dead and like hitting off concrete, likewise the tee boxes. Bounce is ridiculous and inconsistent I have never seen balls bounce 12 ft over a flag before at all angles until playing here you would have more luck landing a wedge on the motorway. Credit where credit is due the greens are very good but the rest of the course lets it down and needs digging up. Better courses in the area for less money, none of my group will be returning.

The course was in terrible condition, very dry and uneven bounces on fairways. The ball was bouncing over the flag from well short of the green and balls were impossible to stop. Once on the green the surfaces were reasonable. The tees were very bare and uneven. Fairways patchy and inconsistent with large areas of bare grass. Will not return to this course in the future. Tapton and Walton are much better courses in the area.

11 Sept two none members arive to play pre booked 18 holes for 10.40 am assured this was not a time effected by club match play or a busy time, checked in 10.30 am, and given go ahead to play. at first tee found four ball waiting to start ? followed their very slow play on first, than found another four ball waiting for second hole start ? slow play on second hole, arived third tee 11.20 to find three more four balls waiting to play third. estimated wait to play time 15/20 mins, with limited time availible to play we returned to club house, to ask why the course is so busy? and told the problem is members who turn up to play without booked tee time. the result is a string of ruined pre booked play times, on complaint got credit slip reurned to play again some time, but the thing is how do we or you know we will not have this problem again ?

At least 5 years after the course redevelopment started the course is still a bit of a mess. The 283 yard par 4 second is now a 100 yard par 4 and there are 4-5 temporary greens in October. Although the people are friendly, the club seem to have lost sight of keeping the course playable. You can get an afternoon round on a Sunday for £9. In its current state that is a little expensive.

Grassmoor course is an 18 hole course, undulating and with wide fairways and easy rough. Unfortunately it is built on a former industrial site and there is still work going on to dump tons of waste material which is being shaped into hills etc. This detracts considerably from the enjoyment of the game. The greens are of a various quality, some are good. There is also a couple of temporary greens which are poor. A good course for a beginner as ir is easy to play.

The course is very dry and not in the best condition. The greens are ok whilst some bunkers lack sand.
Iy is quite hilly but genetally reasonable value for money. A fairer test would be more accurate when tje long dry spell is over and the rains fall again. The pro shop staff were excellent as wrre the bar staff.

Good value golf

The course is enjoyable and reasonably priced. But for this value you have to have compromise. the tee times are too close together. It often gets overbooked leading to extremely slow busy rounds. The tee areas take a beating and the bunkers are awful. Not enough sand with lots of small gravel. That being said , the rest of the course is kept well for such as busy course.

I've always enjoyed the course. It's nothing special scenically, but is excellent value for money and the greens are challenging and in decent nick. Played yesterday, and the round was marred only by the horrendous winter mats. Half are decent, but the rest are atrocious. Slippy, lop sided. Impossible to get a tee in sometimes. The course has just had a revamp of the range with Trackman installed. Excellent news and I look forward to using the facilities. However, if you've hundreds of thousands to invest, is it too much to ask to get the basics righht on the course?

The course was very dry & hard - desperately in need watering on the fairways & greens but no different to most courses I guess during this prolonged dry spell - not a bad layout and forgiving off the tee - good food & drink before & after as usual.
Pace of play was rather slow following a senior comp and in front of us was a single player & his caddying wife - constantly holding up our 4ball up.

South Chesterfield Review

Round played July 2024. This round was midweek and was directly behind senior members playing in a competition. The 4 members in front had no intention of letting me and my playing partner through (both single figure handicaps) during the round. It actually took over 5 hours to complete! We had to wait on every tee and every approach shot to the greens. On 2 occasions I saw one of the members play out of a greenside bunker and not even rake it afterwards! The etiquette from these so-called members was appalling! The course was very dry in places, you cannot fly the ball into the greens as they are so firm. The tees were very scruffy, lots of bare patches as were the fairways. Some of the bunkers had hardly any sand in them and the bunkers that had some sand were full of stones. The 18th fairway was terrible, you do well to find grass on this hole. When we had finally completed our round we both had a well deserved drink in the clubhouse, it was like walking into a morgue. An extremely negative environment full of senior members who obviously think they are more important than a couple of paying visitors. Overall, it was a very disappointing visit. The only positive was the green fee that was less than £20.
